To all whom it may concerm Be it known that I, HERMAN 'Ursem a citizen ofthe UnitedStates', anda resident of Little Falls, county of Morrison, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Copy- Holders, of which the following is a specification. Y My invention 1s an improvement 1n copy holders, and conslsts 1n eertaln novel constructions and combinations of parts herein. after described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a' simple, economical and easily operated device of the character specified, whichniay be easily applied to and detached from -a typewriter-carriage, and which will travel with ythe carriage, .will advance the copy synchronously with the advancement of the writing paper, and wherein the indicator of the typewriter carries the indicator of the copy holder, so thatthe two -indicators always indicate on the copy that portionlof the one that corresponds to the salnelpor- 'tion of the other.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement in place on a typewriter, Fig. 2 is a transverse Vertical section of the improvement, Fig. 3 is la section on the. line 3 3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is abottom plan view of the shield, Fig. 5 is an end view of the copy. roll showing-the support-ing lugs, and Fig. 6 is a front view of Fig. 5.
p The present embodiment of the invention is shown attached to the carriage l of a typewriter 2, and the device comprises a copy roll or .platen 3, arranged directly above the platen 4 of the typewriter. The roll, is provided with aA central shaft 5, whose ends lextendbeyond the roll', and one end of the shaft is provided with a turning knob 6.
A trough or shield 7 of sheet material is` arranged beneath the roll 3, and the shaft 5 is journaled in bearing slots 8, in cross bars '9, which connect the side walls of the trough at each end thereof. The trough in cross 1 section is approximately semicircular, and fits roughly the periphery of the roll 3.
` The rear edge of the trough is flared out- ,i wardly and backwardly to form a guide 10 transverse slots or recesses 12 are provided for the copy 11, and a plurality of lspaced inthe bottom of the trough. The rod '13 is journaled in arms 15, and
the said arms extend forwardly to a connection with a rod 16 rigidly connected with y the carriage 1 of the typewriter. Said bar- 16 extends substantially parallel with the front bar 17 of the carriage, and slightly to a the rear thereof, and the arms 15 are pivoted on the said rod.
The cross bars 9 before mentioned, are offset inwardly in front of the trough, and from thence extend forwardly as arms 18 'to a connection with the rod 16. The front Vend of each arm is provided with a transverse grove 19, for receiving the rod 16, and a latch lever 20 is pivoted intermediate its ends between a pair of spaced lugs 21 on ythe bar near the groove-19.
' The front end of the lever is also transversely grooved to receivethe rod 16, and a spring 22 presses the latch lever 'toward the rod. The latch lever bar and spring form a sectional clamp or bearing for engaging the rod, and for .detachably connecting th'e holder for swinging movement om the rod.
A spring. 23 is arranged between each arm 18 and the adjacent arm'15 of the rod 13, and normally pulls the roll 3 toward'the rod 13 andv toward the platen roll 4.a A rod 24 is arranged above the roll 3, land is provided at spaced intervals with sleeves or col- Vlars 25 of rubber orl like material, which bear against the surface of the roll 3 and hold the copy firmly in place.
The ends of the rod 24 are bent forwardly and downwardly at 27, and each`extremity is provided with an inwardly extending an# guiar lug 28, which is journaled-in an opening in the adjacent arm 18. A spring 29 is arranged between each portion 27-and the adjacent arm 18.
The upper part of each of the portions 27 is bent downwardly toward the top of the roll as shown at 26 in Fig. 1 to bring the collars 25 into contact with the copy roll.
The shaft 5 of the roll 3'is provided with a gear wheel 30, at one end, one preferablyy adjacent to the knob 6. AA pinion 33 is se.- cured to the rod 13 and meshes with the gear wheel 30, and the platen roll 4v of the typewriter is provided with a gear wheel.-

They indicator for the copy consists of an arm 40, provided at one end with an upwardly extending angular portion 41, extended adjacent to the copy on the copy roll and at the other end the arm is hinged at 43 to one end of a clam 42.
The clamp is provi ed with a pair of blades or jaws 44 for engaging the indi` cator 45 of the typewriter, and the jaws are clamped on the indicator by a set screw 46. The indicator 41 is in alinement with the indicator 45, and hence indicates always a point on the copy corresponding to the point indicated on the writing paper by the indicator 45.' 4
