To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. GLEARY, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hat, and particularly pertains to the construction of the same.
It is the object of this invention to rovicle a hat which is permeable by both light and air, and is at the same time a shade for the eyes.
Another object is to provide a novel manher of shaping a hat crown of transparent, moisture-proof material, and perforating the same with a number of orifices to admit of a free passage of air to and from the interior of the hat, which orifices are so placed and protected that rain cannot enter the hat therethrough. The advantage of a hat of this character is the admission of light and air to the hair and scalp, which has a beneficial effect in maintaining a healthy growth of hair, preventing baldness and in restoring a devitalized condition of the hair and scalp to normal.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly in section of a hat constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line X-X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line Y-Y, Fig. 2.
In the manufacture of the hat I employ a transparent material of any suitable character, preferably that which possesses the qualities of nonabsorptiveness, lightness, elasticity and flexibility, and which may be either molded into form by casting in molds and afterward allowed to set and harden, or pressed into shapes from sheet material. The entire crown and side portion, constituting the dome of the hat, is formed of this material, as shown in Fig. 1, preferably in one piece or in sections cemented or otherwise fastened together.
The novel and important features of this invention reside in the manner in which the transparent crown and side portions or dome of the hat are shaped, which consists in forming a series of superposed annular cor- Specification of Letters Patent.

a series of offsets which extend entirely around the hat. The material forming the offset portions is cut away at intervals to form a series of elongated orifices 3 under the overhanging portions of the corrugations 2, through which currents of air may freely pass; tie air entering the orifices 3 on the sides of the hat and passing out through the uppermost orifices 3 in the crown thereof, thus permits a constant and free circulation of air in the interior of the hat. These orifices 8 being disposed in the offset portions of the corrugations, are thus shielded by the outer surface thereof against the inflow of rain; water falling on the hat, passing from one corrugation to the next over the overhanging edges thereof.
The lower smooth portion 2 of the transparent dome is designed to be inserted in a band of felt 4, or other suitable material on the lower edge of which is formed the vizor or rim 5 of the hat, the material of the dome of the hat extending to a point adjacent to the underside of the rim 5.
The lower corrugation 2 on the dome is designed to extend over the upper edge of the band 4:, so as to form a water-shed to prevent water passing behind the band, and at the same time provide a ridge against which the upper edge of the band 4 abuts. The smooth portion 2 of the transparent dome extending as it does around the interior of the band 4, forms a reinforcement therefor and at the same time provides a moisture-proof, non-absorbent, sweat band on the inner edge of the rim 5, which prevents perspiration from the head of the wearer passing through and soiling the felt portion of the hat. The transparent dome and the band 4 may be attached together in any desired manner, and an ornamental band or ribbon 6 may be mounted on the outside of the band 4: in the usual manner; and a leather sweat band 6 may be placed on the inside of the band 2, if desired.
As a means of cooling the sweat band 6 and the portion 2, and at the same time assist in inducing the admission of air to the interior of the hat, the outer face of the smooth portion 2 of the bowl is provided with a series of vertically disposed grooves or channels 7, which are open at their lower ends to the atmosphere, adjacent to the inner edge of the rim 5, and terminate at their upper ends in perforations 8, leading to the interior of the hat. The currents of air which will naturally flow through these grooves or channels 7 have a tendency to cool the sweat band 2 or 6, so the band will not heat the head during warm weather. It will be manifest that this form of construction may be applied to hats of any description, and may be varied in form to suit the style or requirements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis 1. A hathaving transparent, nonabsorbent crown and side portions, both of said portions being crimped to form a series of superposed annular corrugations, and having a number of perforations in the overhanging edges of said corrugations.
2. A hat having transparent, nonabsorbent crown and side portions, said portions crimped to form a series ofsuperposed annular corrugations, having a number of perforations in the overhanging edges of said corrugations, and a fibrous band into which the lower edge of the crown extends and on which a vizor or rim is formed, to form a non-absorbent sweat band.
3. A hat having transparent, nonabsorbent crown and side portions, said portions crimped to form a series of superposed annular corrugations, having a number of perforations in the overhanging edges of said corrugations, a fibrous band into which the lower edge of the crown extends and on which a vizor or rim is fonned, to form a non-absorbent sweat band, and a series of grooves formed in said side portions, each of said grooves opening to the exterior of the hat below the rim and terminating in a perforation leading to the interior of the hat.
4. A hat comprising a dome having a smooth portion and a corrugated portion, said smooth portion extending into a fibrous band on which a vizor is formed, to form a sweat band, and a series of grooves on said smooth portion, said grooves opening to the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
exterior of the hat at one end and the interior of the hat at the other, to form air passages between the sweat-band and the fibrous band.
5. A hat comprising a transparent, nonabsorbent dome, having a series of superposed, overhanging corrugations extending aro-und its upper portion, with orifices formed in the overhang of said corrugations to admit the passage of air to and from the interior of the hat, and a fibrous band into which the. lower smooth portion of the sides extends.
6. A hat comprising a transparent, nonabsorbent dome, having a series of superposed, overhanging corrugations extending around its upper portion, with orifices formed in the overhang of said corrugations to admit the passage of air to and from the interior of the hat, a fibrous band into which the lower smooth portion of the sides extends, and a series of vertically disposed grooves on the exterior of said smooth portion adjacent to said fibrous band, said grooves leading from the exterior of the hat below the band to the interior thereof.
7. A hat comprising a transparent, nonabsorbent dome, having a series of superposed, overhanging corrugations extending around its upper portion, with orifices formed in the overhang of said corrugations to admit the passage of air to and from the interior of the hat, a fibrous band into which the lower smooth portion of the sides extends, a series of vertically disposed grooves on the exterior of said smooth portion adjacent to said fibrous band, said grooves leading from the exterior of the hat below the band to the interior thereof, a rim or vizor formed on the lower edge of the band, the upper edge of said fibrous band terminating beneath and adjacent to the lowermost oi'erhanging corrugation.
