cARPE'r-BEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1911.
Application filed January 31, 1910. Serial No. 541,166.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH BRowNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-l3eaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in carpet beaters, its object being to provide an improved construction of wire beater including improved means for securing and brac ing the beater portion in the handle.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved invention; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the handle with the beater portion broken away.
Referring to the drawings A represents the beater portion preferably composed of two pieces of wire intertwisted to form a pair of loops. The ends of the wires composing the loops are intertwisted, one pair of the intertwisted ends being extended in alinement with the beater wing and then bent upwardly toward the handle B to form a heel 2, the end Sof said wires being inturned and secured within the handle. The opposite pair of ends 4: of the wires are carried in a straight line from the inner end of the beater wing to the adjacent end of the handle B and then carried through the handle and secured therein, as shown in Fig. 2. The handle is turned upwardly at an angle with the beaterwing as shown so that in grasping the device the natural position of the hand tends to hold the beater wing parallel with the surface to be beaten, the heel assisting in causing the wing to be turned into flat contact with the surface. Further the coperation of the heel 2 and of that portion of the wire 4 which extends upwardly from the inner end of the beater to the adjacent end of the inclined handle, make it a particularly strongly braced support for the beater wing.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described the combination of a handle, a beater wing formed with intertwisted wires, a portion of the wires extending rearwardly in alinement with the wing and then upwardly at an angle therewith and being secured to the inner end of the handle and a portion of the wires extending upwardly from the inner end of the beater wing in a straight line to the inner end of the handle and being so secured in the handle as to hold the handle at an angle with the wing.
In testimony whereof I atliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RALPH BROWNSON.
Witnesses:
