UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDERS G. I-IOEGREN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE HANDY GLOVE FAS- TENER COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A PARTNERSHIP-FIRM.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 29, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDERs Gr. HOEGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to fastening devices of the type employing a cord and a plate cooperating therewith adapted for attachment to the article to be fastened and operating topermit of the movement of the cord with relation to the plate for releasably securing the cord in adjusted position and permitting the same to be released by loosening it; my invention being devised more particularly for use as a glove fastener though it may be applied to other articles as will be manifest.
My object is to provide a novel and simple construction of fastening means which may be easily operated to grip the cord at the desired points for securely fastening the article equipped therewith and readily operated to release the grip on the cord for loosening it.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wristportion of a glove formed of relatively movable sections for permitting the glove to fit the wrist, and equipped with my improved fastening means; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the construction shown in Fig. 1, with the fastener device released and the wrist-sections of the glove extended; Fig. 3 is a section taken at the line 3 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow, and enlarged; and Fig. 4 a perspective view of the cordengaging plate employed.
For the purpose of illustrating my improved fastening-means I have shown them as applied to a glove the wrist-portion of which is represented at 6. As is usual in glove constructions the wrist-band is capable of being gathered about the wrist of the wearer, a gore or web-section 7 being employed for preventing the formation of an objectionable gap at the wrist.
To one portion 9 of the wrist-section of the glove is attached an end of a cord 10, as by passing this end of the cord through a hole in the glove and knotting it on the inside thereof, as represented at 11. To the lap-portion 12 of the glove is secured a tab 13 which contains a hole 14 and to which is fastened a plate 15, as shown in Fig. 3, with the central portion of the plate registering with the hole 1.4:. The plate 15 contains two openings 17 and 18, the opening 17 being'of an arc-shape, by preference, and the other opening 18 preferably smaller and circular. The plate 15 is secured to the tab 13 preferably in the position shown to cause the openings 17 and 18 to be positioned as indicated. The free end of the cord 10 passes upward through the slot 17, then over the web between the'holes 17 and 18, and thence backward through the hole 18, and across the rear side of the plate to the slot 17 through which latter the cord passes outwardly between the end wall of the slot 17 nearest the fixed end of the cord and the portion of the cord first passed through it.
It will be manifest fro-m the foregoing that when the parts of the fastening device occupy the positions illustrated in Fig. 1, the portion of the cord which lies in the end of the slot 17 is forced against the wall thereof by the tension on the portion of the cord bearing against it and thus the cord is prevented from slipping in the holes 17 and 18. If, however, the tab 13 is swung away from the glove to the position illustrated in Fig. 2 the binding tension of the looped cord against that part of the cord which lies at the end of the slot 17 is relieved and the cord may freely slide in the holes 17 and 18. It will thus be understood that the glove may be fastened by merely pulling on the free end of the cord extending beyond the plate 15 and when the grasp of the operator is released will automatically become gripped in adjusted position; and when release of the glove is desired, the same may be effected by merely swinging the tab 13 away from the fixed end of the cord which frees the frictional grip on the cord, and allows it to run freely in the holes 17 and 18.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with an article having relatively movable parts, of means for resaid openings, thence across the plate and through the other of said openings, and thence back across the opposite side of the plate and through the first opening with the free end of the cord bound between one of the walls of said opening and the section of the cord lying within this opening, the section of the cord extending across the plate and producing the said binding action upon the free end of the cord in the opening, eX-
tending at an angle to the section of the cord which extends from its point of attachment with the article tothe plate.
2. In combination with an article having relatively movable parts, of fastening means for releasably fastening said parts together, comprising a plate carried by one of said parts and containing two openings one of which is of a length sufiicient to permit two across the opposite side'of the plate andthrough the first opening with the free end of the cord confined between the wall of the opening nearest the point of attachment of the fixed end of the cord with the article and the section of the cord lying in this opening.
