Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1911.
Application filed December 22, 1910. Serial No. 598,832.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, 1'V1L11ELM G. DANIEL- snN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Plow-Frame, of which the fol--- lowing is a specification.
This invention has relation to frames for plows of the gang type especially adapted to be used in connection with traction engines as propelling means and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a supporting frame for the plow beams, which frame is of novel and substantial structure, and especially designed to withstand the strain to which it is subjected when the plow is in operation. I
In the accompanying drawings :'Figure 1 is a top plan view of the plow frame and plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the plow. Fig. 4.- is a side elevation of the rear portion of one of the plow standards and the rear portion of an arm which is mounted upon the plow frame showing the manner in which the said arm and standard is connected. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a lever mechanism used upon the plow.
The plow frame consists of forward cross beams 1 which are spaced from each other and are in parallel relation and a land side beam 2 which is secured at its forward end between theends of the spaced-cross beams 1 and which lies at a right -angle to the said cross beams. their forward ends between the cross beams 1 and lie parellel with the land side beam 2. The beams 3'increase gradually in length from the furrow side of the frame of the plow toward the land side thereof. A frame bar 3 is interposed between the end of each x beam 2') and the side of the next adjacent beam and are of special design as will be hereinafter explained. A boltdpasses trans-. verscly through the rear end portion of each of the beams 3 and the intermediate portion of the next adjacent beam 3 and serves as means for holding the rear end portions of the said beams 3 in proper relation to each other and forclamping the bar 3 in place. A. beam 5 is obliquely positioned above the rear end portions of the beams 3 and is secured to each of the said beams and serves as a means for bracing the same in proper relation to each other. The frame of which 138211115 3 are SGCUl'fid It i the beams hereinbefore described form com ponent parts constitutes .the supportingv structure for the plow beams to be explained hereinafter and the said beams are preferably made from channel iron. The intermediate portions of the beams 3 are held apart by spacing bars 6 as few or as many of which may be employed within the frame structure may be deemed necessary. A platform 7 is-located in front of the cross beams 1- and is supported upon the uppermost of the said beams.
Bearings 8 are located upon the intermediate portions of the beams 3 and shafts 9 are journaled in the said bearings. Spaced arms 10 are fixed to the intermediate portions of the shafts 9 and the forward ends of the plow beams 11 are pivotally connected with the said'spaced arms 10. The plow beams 11 are made up of binary members 12 which are bolted or otherwise connected together in any desired manner. Standards 13 are carried at the rear ends of the plow beams 11 and furrow openers 11. (of any desired pattern) are attached to the lower ends of the standards 13. The standards 13 are provided at their rear edges with perforated lugs 13. Each shaft 8) is also provided with an upstanding arm 15, the arm '15 being located between the pair of arms 10 attached to the same shaft 9. is journaled in bearings 17 which are mounted upon the frame cross beams 1 and each of the arms 15 is operatively connected with a lever 25 supported upon the shaft 16 as will now be described. At the intermediate portion of the shaft 16 a relatively long lever 18 is fixed to the said shaft and is provided .with a spring pawl 19 adapted to' vided for the shaft 16. At a point between its power end and its fulcrum the lever 18 is operatively connected with the, arm 15 of the intermediate shaft 9 of theseries of the said shafts by means of a rod 21; the said rod 21 being provided with a turn buckle 22 of usual pattern whereby the said rod may be lengthened or shortened as desired. -Arms 23 are fixed to the end portions of the shaft 16 and each arm 23 is provided at its upper end with a gear segment 24. A lever 25 is fulcrumed to each of the arms 23 and each lever is provided with a spring pawl 26 adapted to engage the teeth of the adjacent gear segment 24. In a manner similar to the connection between the gs lTpro- A shaft 16 i vices 6.
lever 18 and arm of one of the shafts 9, each of the levers is operatively connected by means of a rod2l with one of the arms 15 of one of the shafts 9 so that the lever 18 which is fixed to the shaft ltl is connected with one of the shafts 9 and each of the levers 25- whioh is fulerumed to an arm fixed to the shaft" 16 is connected to one of the arms 15 of one of the shafts 9 whereby each upward direction as will be fully explained hereinafter. The frame bars 3 are provided with arms 28 which extend downwardly and are rearwardly curved at their lower portions as illustrated inFig. t of the drawings. Links 29 are pivotally connected at one end with the lower end portions of the arms28 and at't-heir otherends with the perforated lugs 13 of the plow standards 13.
As will be hereinafter explained, the plat-' form 7 is over a coupling device with which the plow frame is connected with the frame of a traction engine and the relatively long lever 18 is located adjacent the said platform, therefore an operator standing upon the platform may drive the engine and at the same time manipulate the lever 18 and the shaft 16 to which it is attached; Inas ,much as the said lever 18 is fixed to the shaft 17 when the lever 18 is swung and the said shaft 16 is turned, all of the levers 25 will turn about the axis of'the shafts 16 for the reason that the said levers 25 are fulcrumed to the arms 24. which in turn are fixed t0 the said shaft 16. Thus when it is desired to raise all of the plow beams 11 the lever 18 is swung in a fof ward direction and through the connection rod 21 the arms 15 are swung about the axes of the shafts 9 and the arms 10 are swung. in an upward direction whereby the forward ends of the plow beams are elevated As the forward ends of the beams 11 are swung upwardly asabove described, the standards 13 are turned so that their lower'ends are upwardly disposed and the forward pointedends of the furrow openers 1d are thereby upwardly disposed. As the plow continues to move in a forward direction, the said furrow openers willwork up through the soil and the intermediate portions of the standards 13 will swing upon the links 29 1s pivots until the ends of the said links whichare connected with the said standards 1.3 are swung above those ends of the said links which are pivotally connected with the arms 28. Thus the rear ends of the plow beams 11 are simultaneously ele'vatedat the time the forward ends thereof are raised. This operation occurs throughout the entire-series-o'f furrow openers when the lever 18 is swung in a forward direction and when the said lever 18 furrow opener is operatively connected with the said lever 18) the lever 25 which isoperatively connected with the furrow opener l4 desired to be raisedis swung and the same operationprevails in connection with the furrow opener desired to be raised as that described in connection with the in termediate furrow opener which is operatively connected with the lever 18.
The frame-of the plow as hereinbefore described is mounted upon supporting wheels. Having described "the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
A plow structure including a frame consisting of a transversely d1sposed frame beam, a side beam connected at lts forward end with the end of the transversely disposed beam and lying at a right angle. with-rela tion to said transversely disposed beam, parallel beams connected at their forward ends with the transversely disposed beam,
said parallel beams increasing in length from the furrow end of the transversely disposed I beam to the landside end thereof, frame bars interposed between the ends of the shorter beams and the sides of the next adjacent longer beams, said frame bars having depending arms, shafts journaled upon the intermediate portions of the parallel beams, plow beamspivo'tally connected with the said shafts, and links pivotally' connecting the lower portions of the plow beams with the lower portions of said arms.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.-
