JNVENTOR.
WILLIAM G. LUCAS, OF MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 20, 1911.
Patented Oct. 3, 1911. Serial No. 622,312.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ,VVILLIAM G. LUCAS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ties and rail fasteners, and has for its object to provide a metallic tie for supporting rails or the confronting ends thereof, and to provide the 1 tie with novel fasteners for retaining the rails upon the tie.
Other objects of my invention are to combine concrete and metal in the form of a tie that can be easily installed upon the ballast of a roadbed and tamped, and to use fasteners in connection with the tie that will prevent lateral and vertical displacement of the rails of a track. I
Further objects of my invention are to provide a metallic reinforced tie that is simple in construction strong and durable, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction consisting of com paratively few parts easy to assemble and maintain in order.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of ties and fasteners in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of a portion of one of the ties, partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, Fig. 1 is an end View of the tie, Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the rail chairs, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a detached fastener, and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a portion of the chairs of the rail.
The tie consists of two channel-bars, four rail chairs, four fasteners and a concrete body, together with the fastening means employed for connecting these parts together.
The chairs are identical in construction,
each chair comprising base flanges 1, a web 2 and a top flange 3 constituting a rail seat. The web 2 of each chair has longitudinal oppositely disposed ribs 4: adjacent to the top flange 3, and the chairs at the confronting ends of the webs 2 thereof are slotted, as at 5 directly beneath the ribs 4:, and these ribs, the web 2 and the top flange 3 are cut away upon an angle, as at 6, the cut in the top flange 3 forming a slot 7 The base flanges I of the chairsare provided with longitudinal seats 8 for the lower flanges 9 of channel-bars 10, these bars having the upper flanges 11 thereof supporting the top flanges 3 of the chairs. The channel-bars 10 rest against the outer edges of the ribs 1 and said bars are connected to the chairs by transverse bolts 12 and nuts 13.
The channel-bars intermediate the ends of the tie are connected by transverse rods or other fastening means 14: and arranged longitudinally between said channel-bars are metallic reinforcements 16 within a concrete body 17. The ends of the-concrete body 17 protrude into the space between the webs 2 of the inner chairs and the walls of the bars 10, and to reinforce this concrete body, expanded metal, twisted rods or similar structures can be employed.
The rails to be supported by the tie comprise heads 15, webs 18 and a base 19, the base being of a less width than the heads 15 and adapted to rest uponthe chairs at the meeting or confronting edges thereof.
The fasteners employed for holding the rail consists of reinforced splice bars 20 adapted to brace the inner and outer sides of the rail and support the head 15 thereof, these splice bars resting upon the chairs of the tie. The fasteners are provided with depending locking members 21 adapted to engage in the slots ,7 of the top flanges 3 of the chairs. The members 21 have vertical confronting sides and inclined sides 22 to engage the angular end of the web 2 and the ribs 4:, said members also having lips 23 which engage in the slots 5, these lips preventing vertical displacement of said members while the walls of the slots 7 prevent longitudinal displacement.
The tie can be made up with the outer chairs detached, and after the inner fasteners have been placed in position, the rails can be placed upon the tie, the outer fasteners placed in the outer chairs and the chairs placed between the ends of the channel-bars and clips is obviated, it is apparent that the expense of maintenance is reduced to a minimum.
While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible of such changes as fall within the scope of the appended.
claims.
