Be it known that I, Annnziar ARENDAR- 02171;, a subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Fasteners and Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a hat pin fastener and point protector, and the objects of my invention are to provide a device that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a hat pin to lock the hat pin within a hat and prevent its accidental displacement, to provide a device of the above type that will protect the pointed end of the pin and prevent pedestrians from being injured from coming into contact with the protruding end of the pin.

Further objects of my invention are to furnish a device the above type with a novel gripping mechanism that is easily and quickly manipulated, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction.

A device in accordance with this invention comprises an oblong housing, having side plates 1 and 2 and end plates 3 and 4:, these plates having the ends thereof formed integral with the outer ends of the plates -1 and 2 bent outwardly and flared to provide a head 5. The end plate 4 has integral arms 6 bent upwardly in proximity to the edges of the plates 1 and 2, to round oft" the head 5 and prevent the fingers from entering between the plates 1 and 2.

The inner side of the plate 2 is provided with a transverse rib 17 and with a guide lug 18, said rib being located adjacent to the ears 7 and the guide lug 18 at a point intermediate said ears and the end plate 1. The guide lug 18 has an opening '19 to receive the pointed end of the pin, and the rib 17 is adapted to engage a shoulder 20 formed by cutting away the pointed end of the pin 15, as at 21.

Arranged against the inner sides of the flared ends of the plates 1 and 2 is a leaf spring 22, having one end thereof anchored at the guide lug 18, and the opposite end thereof engaging the inner side of the lever 9 adjacent to the slot 12, whereby the outer end of the lever will be normally forced outwardly and the inner end thereof into engagement with the hat pin 15.

By pressing upon the outer end 11 of a lever 9, the pin 15 can be inserted in the device, the inward movement of said pin being limited by the pointed end thereof engaging in the guide lug 18. By limiting the inward movement of a pin, the shoulder 20 is in proximity to the rib 17, and if the shoulder does not engage the rib and prevent withdrawal of the pin 15, it is only necessary to rotate the pin until the shoulder 20 engages the rib. By then releasing the outer end of a lever, the tapered pin 10 enters the opening 13, and the end of a pin 15 will be forced into engagement pin,'whi le the mechanism within the hous- I ing prevents the device from becoming accidentally displaced relatively to the hat pin.
