Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. WHITMORE, of Bloomington, in the county ot' McLean, and State of Illinois, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Steam-Packing; andI do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of `the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of ref'- erenee marked thereon.

My invention relates to the method of packing the piston-heads of horizontal steam-cylinders', and consists mainly in tllelemployment of a hard met-al shoe upon the lower or li'earing portion of the piston, and soarxangiug the saine' that when worn down it can, by the use of suitable wedges or shimmers, be set up so as to t the cylinder properly.

It will often happen that this .wlll answer every purpose, as the shoe is worn down only for a certain distance ou each side of its lowermost point.

iSometimes I prefer, instead of usingwedges, to set up the shoe by means of thin curved plates or sl1immers introduced between the cylinder of the pistonhead and the shoe.
