IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-SHADES.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ROBINSON, of Spring Valley, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Shades, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speci-' fication, and in which Figure 1 is a plan of a shade constructed in accordance with my improvement; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same in part, showing also, by dotted lines, said shadeas opened to admit of its being laid flat, or to facilitate the packing of it; Fig. 3, a similar section taken near the top of the shade, and Fig. 4 a View of said shade when made in pivoted sections and folded the one section upon or over the other.

My invention consists, first, in a lampshade cut or formed in the shape of the frustum of a cone or pyramid, made up of a series of sections pivoted to each other in succession, in such manner as that when the shade is opened said sections may befolded the one upon or over the other, whereby the shade may be packed in a very small space or compass; and inthis connection the invention likewise consists in a peculiar lip-like stop to the pivoted sections, to arrest and hold them in position when unfolded, and the shade closed by a suitable catch or fastening at the opening made inits side.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the shade there represented may be made of any suitable material or combination of materials, but preferably of thin'elastic tin-sheet, cut or formed, as an entirety, in the shape of the frustum of a cone or pyramid, with a dividing-opening, b, at its one side, by which general construction or configuration and division of it said shade may be spread or laid out flat, or nearly so, as represented by dotted lines in Fig. 2, for the convenience of packing or putting away, and may be readily secured to hold it in form for use by cutting a slot, 6,

.near one of its opening ends; and forming a clasp, f, by or through a bent projection or extension of its other opening end, and hooking the latter into the former; or the shade may be secnred,when closed,in any other suitable manner. For the still greater convenience of packing or stowing away in a small compass, saidshade, having a diViding opening, b, at its one side, and made in the shape of the frustum of a cone or pyramid; as de scribed, may be made up of a series of sections, A, pivoted to each other, as at a, so that when the end sections are unclasped or opened the several sections in the series may be turned or folded to lie the one over or upon the other. and fiat or straight, as represented in Fig. 4. To adjust the several sections to their proper relative positions when the shade is clasped or closed, and to lock or hold them in position, each sect-i011 A at its back or hinged edge, and at any suit-able distance above or to one side of its rivet or pivot a, is formed with a locking lip or stop, 0, which may be made by partially cutting or indenting it and bending such indented'portion slightly inward, so that the same will receive the underlapping edge of the adjacent section, within it. This forms avery simple and efficient mode of looking the several sections and holding the shade in form. I

What is here claimed, and desired tobe secured by Letters Patent, is

1. A lamp-shade cut or formed in the shape of the frustum of a cone or pyramid, with a dividing-opening, b, at its one side, and made up of a series of sections, A, pivoted the one to the other in succession, to fold as described, and the end sections of the opening and closing shade made to clasp or fasten, essentially \VILLIAM ROBINSON.
