To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that-I, Jacon S. GATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a match box more particularly described as a hanging match box, and. the principal object of the invention is to provide a convenient, simple and etlicient device of this character which may be used eltheihas a pocket receptacle for matches, or as a hanging receptacle for the same.

Another object of. the invention is to pro vide a roughened surface adjacent the lid or hanger of the lnix whereupon the matches may be ignited.

The invention consists in the construction generally described in the subjoined spccilithe claims.

Referring'now more particularly to the drawing, the receptacle A is preferably formed of a single piece of material, the sides 11 and the end pieces 12 being folded in an upright position and connected to gether by means of the'flaps 13. The bottom 14 of the receptacle is extended at the other end to form an end piece 15 and a 'flap 16. .The outer end of the flap 16 15 formed with a tongue 17 in which is a hole 18. the inner face of the flap 16 belng provided with an abrased or roughened portion 20. The cover B is also'formed of a single piece of material and is provided with anaperture 19 extending from one edge of the cover toward the other edge. This cover 'is adapted to slide over the receptacle A, and

It will be seen that the articles, such as matches. will .be supported by the receptacle. the aperture 19 being adapted to permit and to facilitate the taking ofinatches from the receptacle. \Vhcn the box is closed or is not intendedto be used as a hanging receptacle. the flap 16 is folded over the reccptacle, and with the receptacle portion is slid within the cover, acting in conjunction with the cover. to keep the matches from falling out. The width of the tongue portion 17 is less than the width of the aperture 19. so that when the flap 16 is over the receptacle. it is not necessary to remove the cover B entirely from the receptacle to disengage or to pull out the flap. In the foregoing specification. l have described 11 specific embodiment of the device, but it is obvious that many variations will suggest themselves-to persons skilled in the art, and yet will come within the spirit of the invention,

I claim:

1. The combination of a cover formed with an opening extending from one edge thereof, the opening being wider near the said edge, an d a receptacle slidable within. the cover and having a flap to extend over the receptacle, the flap being reduced in width at the free end, whereby the flap may be raised through the wider portion of the opening when the receptacle is withdrawn part way from within the cover.

2. The combination of a cover formed with an aperture in one face extending from one edge, and a receptacle slidable within the cover and having a flap adapted to be folded over the receptacle. the flap having a tip less in width than the said aperture, 7

6. In a match box, the combination of a receptacle formed of a single piece of flexible material with one end and the sides thereof turned upright and secured to gether, the other end and a covering flap. being formed asa continuation of the bottom and adapted when covering the recepfade to be flush with the top edges of the upright sides, and a cover provided with an aperture extending from one edge of the front face toward the other edge andadapted slidably to contain the receptacle and the flap, the tip of the flap beingless in width I than the aperture and provided with an aperture to hang up the box, and the remainder of the flap being wider than the aperture, the tip of the flap being narrowed to permit of the withdrawal of the flap from beneath the cover when the receptacle is withdrawn part way from within the cover.
