Description

H. ROST. BAND SAW GUIDE. APPLICATION I'ILJBD MAY 1. 1908.
1,004,204. Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN ROST, 0F STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
BAND-SAW GUIDE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN Rosr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Band-Saw Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in band saw guides, and particularly pertains to that class of devices which are designed to absorb the shocks due to the vibration and jarrings of the band saw.
With the object of providing an improved device of this character, my invention will now be fully described, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved band saw guide, Fig. 2, is a side elevation, Fig. 3 is a detail view, looking at the rear side of the device, Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the supporting member, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the guide member.
Referring more particularly to said drawings, 1 indicates an L-shaped supporting member, having a forwardly projecting toe 2. The vertical or upright portion of said supporting member 1 is adjustably and resiliently suspended from a block 3. The resilience is provided by a plate or plates 4 of resilient metallic structure, laid upon one another or laminated and fastened, as by screws 5, to the upper surfaces of support 1 and block 3, thereby spacing members 1 and 3 apart and providing a resilient spring like action between them. Threaded into the central portion of the member 1 is a bolt or screw 6, which is also extended to and threaded into the block 3, thereby rendering the suspension of member 1 more stable and providing for its adjustment with relation to block 3.
The rear face of block 3 is provided with a circular opening or recess 7 into which is fitted for rotation or rotary adjustment,'a disk-like block 8. Eccentrically positioned on said block 8 and projecting rearwardly therefrom is a shaft or strut 9, which is adapted for securement to a standard or other element of the frame-work of a band saw machine. By means of set screws 10, threaded in the block 3 and bearing against the block 8, and with relation to which the said member 8 is turned and set, the relation of the saw guide to the machine is regulated.

The too 2 is provided for the greater part of its length with a longitudinal slot 11, which merges at its bottom into a dove-tail groove or slide-way 12, the latter extending along the entire length of the toe 2. Said dove-tail groove 12 forms a slide-way for the slide 13, said slide comprising a rectangular block having a dove-tail 14: formed centrally and longitudinally along said slide 13, and being adapted to operate in said slide-way 12. Said slide is longitudinally provided for a part of its length with a slot 15, which registers with the slot 11 formed in said too 2. An adjusting bolt 16, having a large head at its lower end bearing against the bottom of said slide 13 and a nut 16 hearing on the upper side of too 2, extends through slots 11 and 15. By this means the slide 13 may be adjusted and set longitudinally of the supporting member 1.
A pair of thin metallic wings 17 are provided on the front end of slide 13, and are mounted on cars or projections 18 formed or secured on the slide 13, as best shown in Fig. 5, said ears being downwardly and outwardly turned at the forward end of toe 2. Said ears 18 are provided with eyelets 19 to receive set screws 20 by means of which the wings are attached to said ears. Slots provided in said wings provide for the longitudinal and rotative adjustment of said wings. Said wings 17 are adapted to be set with their inner edges 21 in parallel and spaced relation, the space rovided be ing such that the band saw not shown) may be received and guided therebetween.
It is evident from the above, that as the saw operates vertically, and passes through the slots 11 and 15 and between the inner edges 20 of wings 17, its lateral vibration and jarrings will be received by the wings 17 The vibratory movement of said wings as permitted bylaminated plates 45 will permit them to take up and absorb the said jarrings and also properly guide the saw without injury to the saw parts or the parts of the guide. The resilience of the plates 4, further takes up the shock of the jars communicated by the saw to the support and distributes or absorbs the injurious vibrations. It will be seen, therefore, that my improved saw guide is well adapted to perform the functions claimed for it, and is a simple, strong and serviceable device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A band saw guide, comprising, a vertical supporting member, an adjustable resilient connection between one end of said supporting member and said machine, a horizontally and longitudinally movable slide carried by the other end of said supporting member, a bracket rest and spaced Wings mounted on said slide to lie on each side of the saw.
2. A band saw guide, comprising, a vertical supporting member, an adjustable resilient connection between one end of said supporting member and said machine, a horizontal toe formed on said supporting member, said toe having a slideWay formed therein, a slide adjustably carried in said horizontal and longitudinal slideWay, ears formed at opposite sides of said slide, and Wings adjustably secured to said ears, and adapted to be spaced on each side of the saw band.
3. A band saw guide, comprising, a vertical supporting member, an adjustable resilient connection between one end of said supporting member and said machine, a horizontal toe formed on said supporting member, said toe having a horizontal and longitudinal slideway formed therein, a slide adjustably carried in said slideway, ears formed at opposite sides of said slide, and slide-like Wings adjustably secured to said ears and adapted to be spaced on each side of the saw band.
4. A band saw guide, comprising, a vertical supporting member, an eccentrically adjustable block secured to the machine, a spring plate connecting said block and said vertical supporting member, a horizontally and longitudinally adjustable slide mounted on said vertical supporting member, and laterally adjustable saw guide plates mounted on said slide.
5. A ban-d saw guide, comprising, a vertical supporting member, an 'ec'centrically adjustable block secured to the machine, a laminated spring plate connecting said block and said vertical supporting member, an adjustable screw also connecting said elements, a horizontally and longitudinally adjustable slide mounted on said vertical supporting member, and laterally adjustable saw guide plates mounted on said slide.
