ENGINE-STARTING DEVICE.
Specification of; Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
Application filed January 27, 1911. Serial No. 605,002.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND P. Hone- JNIER, J12, citizenfot the United Fitatesyresidf ihg at 'Caineromin the coi'inty of Milani and State of Texas, have invented certain new and 'us'et' ul .ln'iproveinents in EllQillQ-Stilltingdhvicosfhf which the following is a specification. i
This invention pertains to engine starto ingdevices and 1*;ar'ticularly for engines ott the explosive type such as gasand gasolene engines.
The object of the invention 1s to provide a magneto arranged to be driven fast enoiig'h 1 5 to generate suitieient. current to cause a, spark and start the engine without the use of hatteries. i
Another object is the arrangement Wherehy a driving connection is PSililbllSliGCl hego tween the fly-wheel ot' the engine and the magneto after the engine is started. v
A still. further object of the invention is to provide means of the character described that will he strong durahle, efficient, and easy of operation, simple and coinparativel v inexpensive to oonstruchand also in which the several parts Will not he likely to get out of working order.
With the above and other objects in vienn. so; the invention has relation to certain novel. Features of construction and operation, an example of which described. in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein}: 351 Figure 1 is a front elevation incii'iding the fly-wheel of an engine and illustrating a, I modified form Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. 3 is a detail oil the pinion employed in the modified term, and Fig. at is a. detail in section of the brake plunge!" used in the modified form.
In the drawings the numeral dosing. nates the crank shaft of an engine and the flywheel tastened thereon. At one side of: the iv-Wheel standards or supports and 23 are disposed. A table or plattorm 25 is mounted on the standards. it one side of the tahle a magneto 525 is located. From the central portion of the magneto a stem 26 depends through and below the table. On the lower end of the stem a handle lever 27 is fixed and by swinging this lever the magneto may he swung. A janinut 28 is threaded on the stem and is adapted to hind against the underside of theta'hlo and fasten the magneto in position. On the.
."he revel ved.
opposite side of the table from the magneto a. shaft 25.) is supported in bearings-30 and has on its end adjacent the standard 22, a friction gear 31 The inagneto'is provided with av friction pinion 32 of such diameter as to be engaged with either the gear 31 o the fly-wheel 21 Without engaging the other.
A. hearing is mounted on the side of the standard 23 helmv' the table and rotatably eu ms an arbor fl-t on the inner. end of which avvinding spring is seeufed. The rm end of the winding spring is secured to a bar 36 extending between the'standards. On the outer end of the arbor a- Wheel 37 is ;secured a nd a crank handle is alsonfas tened on the arbor by which the latter may By turning the handle so as to revolve the Wheel 37 to the left with relation to Fig. 1 the spring is Wound.
The wheel 37 extends above the shaft 29 and is provided with internal gear teeth 1K pinion 4:0 is loosely mounted on the shaft 29 and IXHSllQS with the teeth of the wheel 37. This pinion has internal" ratchet teeth t'l. engaged hy a. pavvl 5+2 'on the shaft 539. When the Wheel 55'? is revol ved in winding the spring the pawl slips over the teeth tl. but. when the spring is permitted to unwind and thus revolve the wheel 37 n the opposite direction the pawl will engage in the teeth and tansinit rotation to the shaft 29. I
For contro ling the speed at which the s nking unwinds, a governor is provided. This governor comprises a bracket 4-5 fixed on the shaft- 29 and pivotally supporting governor arms 50 having ti ir inner ends engaging; a Hanged sleeve 5:; slidahle on the shaft 2.). This siidahle sleeve is adapted to engage the. upper end oi a lever pivoted ,on the standard 29. The. lower end oi. the lever tit) is located to engage a. horizontal f )riug plunger "[6 n'io'unted on the standard and adapted to impinge the side oi the rim of the triction gear ill. The governor arms are thrown out and move the sleeve tmvard the bracket to ivherelrv the plunger pressed inward and arts as a brake on the friction gear thus controlling the revolution of the same and indirectly the unwinding oi" the spring.
To start the engine the magneto 25 is positioned with its pinion 32 in engagement with the gear 31. The spring is then wound. and in unwindingwill rotate the gear 31 and transn'iit motion to the magneto. The
pivotally supported lltl magneto will generate sufficient current to eausea spark in the engine (not shown) and start the latter. After the engine is started the magneto is swung so that its pinion 32 is thrown out of engagement with the gear 31 and into engagement with the fly-wheel 21, the engine thus being started without the use of batteries.
What I claim is 1. In an engine starting device, the combination with the flywheel of an engine, of a support disposed at one side of the flywheel, av friction driving wheel mounted on the support, a spring motor having driving connection with the driving wheel, a magneto movably mounted on the support having a friction pinion disposed between the flywheel and the driving wheel of such diameter as to engage with one of said wheels uithout engaging with the other, and a derice for moving the magneto and fastening the same-1n position.
2. In an engine starting de'ice, a support, a shaft mounted on the support a friction gear fixed on one end of the shaft, a pinion loosely mounted on the outer end of the shaft and provided with an internal ratchet, a pawl pivoted on the shaft within the pinion and engaging the ratchet thereof, a
driving gear wheel mounted on the support and meshing with the pinion, a coded spring connected to the driving gear and having its outer end attached to the support, and a magneto movably mounted on the support and provided with a friction pinion 1n- FERDINAND P. HUEBNER, JR.
