UNITED STATES PATENT OFETGE.
EDWARD JAMES,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ATTACHING DEVICE FOR RAZOR-STROPS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Devices for Razor- Strops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attaching devices adapted particularly for use in temporarily attaching a razor-strop to a support while using it.
The invention involves the provision of an attaching device for a razor-strop by which the strop may be secured to a support of larger size than the hooks commonly provided for the attachment of strops and of such form that a ring of small size'cannot be passed over it.
The invention is directed to the provision of an attaching device for this and similar purposes which is convenient to use for the purpose above indicated and which may be manufactured at low cost.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a strop having the improved attaching device applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the attaching device, Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the attaching device, and Fig. 5 is a view corresponding to Fig. l and illustrating a modification.
Referring to these drawings, 5 indicates the strop and 6 the holder secured to one end thereof. This holder may be of any suitable character; in the present instance, it is shown as a piece of sheet-metal folded upon itself to form gripping plates lying on opposite sides of the strop and a narrow looped portion 7 connecting these plates. The attaching device has a swivel connection'to the loop 7. The attaching device is a ring consisting of two parts one slidable circumferentially upon the other to close and open the ring. One part 8 has the bodyportion thereof curved to the arc of a circle and forms about two-thirds of such circle. At one end it has a radial stud 9 and its other end is bent out radially to provide means 13 for effecting the swivel connection to the holder. The other part 10 is slidable circumferentiallv upon the body-portion of the part 8 and is here shown as tubular and inclosing the part 8. It is provided with a Specification 'of Letters Patent.

lengthwise slot 11 through which the stud 9 extends to prevent the part 10 from turning. At the free end of the part 10, the slot 11 is widened so as to form converging walls at this widened portion, as shown at 12 in Fig. 1. These converging walls 12 coact with the part 8 with a wedging action when the part 10 is moved to the position for closing the ring so as to hold the two parts in this relation. For this purpose, the opposite sides of the part 8 at the base of the radial projection 13 are preferably flattened slightly as shown. As thus constructed, it will be seen that the part 10 may be moved around upon the part 8 to open the ring and permit of attaching the strop to any suitable rod or other support over which the closed ring could not be passed. This being done, the part 10 may be moved circumferentially upon the part 8 to close the ring and thus prevent detachment of the strop from the support. lVhen in this closed position, the wedging action of the converging walls 1.2 will prevent accidental movement of the part 10 to the open position under the vibration to which the strop and attaching device are subjected when in use.
In Fig. 5, there is shown a modification of the construction above described, in which the invention is embodied in an attaching device for sale separate from the strops with which they are used. In this construction, the end of the part 8 is bent to form an open loop 14 which may be linked with a ring 15 such as is usually provided upon the end of a holder 6. The end of the loop 1 1 is brought around to such a position that when the part 10 is moved around to close the ring, it also closes the loop 1 1. With this device the movement of the part 10 serves the double purpose of precluding detachment of the attaching device from its support and from the ring 15 of the strop, and the device as a whole affords means for securing the strop to supports with which the ring 15 could not be made to coact.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:-
1. An attaching device comprising a ring formed in two parts, one part having a curved portion forming less than a complete circle and having a portion projecting from the curved portion to facilitate making connection to the ring, and the other part being adapted to slide on the curved portion of the first part circumferentially of the ring to carry its end into coaction With the first part to complete the circle of the ring, said end being provided With converging Walls Which coact With a Wedging action with said first-named part, substantially as set forth.
2. An attaching device comprising tWo members, one having the body-portion thereof curved in the arc of a circle and one end thereof bent to form an open loop, and the other member being arc-shaped and adapted to slide circumferentially 0n the body-portion of the first-named member to complete the circle of the two arc-shaped members or to open said circle and permit access to the interior thereof, said secondnalned member, When in the position for closing said circle, having its end closing said open loop, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 25th day of April, 1911.
