WILLIAM SANDER/SON, OFYNEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO HARRY F. WEED, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ATTACHMENT FOR SHOVELS OR SPADES.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ILLIAM SaNnnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Shovels or Spades, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionl relates to devices to be used upon the tread of spades or shovels, and its .especial object is to provide a simple and substantial device that will stand up under the natural strain and wear, permit of easy adjustment and removal and remain in rigid engagement with the implement to which itis attached while in use.
The device is more fully described in the :following specification7 set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shovel with my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of same. Fig. i is an enlarged detail sectional View. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the device before it is formed. F 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a modification of my invention. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. S is a plan view of the modification before it is formed.
My device consists of a piece of sheet metal 6, blan-ked out in the shape as shown A. in Fig. 5 and with cuts in the metal at v 7-7 and 8 8. It is then turned to form a A and 13.
The outer top surface of my device is rounded and as it rests upon the upper edge Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 20, 1911.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
serial No. 634,205.
of the shovel the whole blade is strengthened and the user can apply foot pressure thereon with perfect. comfort and increased etliciency.
ln the modification shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the parts 17 in Fig. 8 are of greater length so that when they are turned inwardly as shown at 16 in Fig. 6 they extend almost to the point where the members 11 and 12 engage with the surface of the shovel. This gives a greater' gripping surface and increases the ease of application of the device to the shovel.
Uy invention is preferably constructed of sheet metal and after it has been shaped it can be tempered to secure a greater amount of spring and resiliency.
As will be apparent, my device is simple and inexpensive, the number of operations required to make it being minimized.
lhat I claim as new is:
1. A device of the character described consistingof a curved substantially cylindrical body provided with openings in its side walls, the opening in the convex side wall being of greater length than the opening in the concave side wall and means within the said openings adapted to engage with a shovel.
2. A device of the character described consisting of a substantially cylindrical body provided with a plurality of wedges on its inner walls and flanges on its lower side, the said wedges and flanges being adapted to engage with a shovel.
3. A device of the character described consisting of a substantially cylindrical body provided. with an opening along its lower side, the said opening being of greater width at the ends than at the center, and shovel engaging means comprising wedges upon the inner walls and flanges upon the lower side of the said body.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of June 1911.
VILLIAM SANDERSON. Witnesses:
HARRY F. Wenn, J ULiUs WV. MANNEBACH.
