RICHARD L. LED, 0]? NEW YORK, N. Y;
BATH-CLOSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, RICHARD L. LEO, of New York city, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bath-Closets, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof.
My invention relates particularly to the provision of a bath closet in a wall of extreme thinness; my invention being designed for the purpose of providing a bath closet of such dimensions that it may readily be installed in a thin partition wall, the thickness of which is usually six inches.
The object of my invention is not only to provide a bath closet of such dimensions that it may be installed in a partition wall of the thickness referred to, but which is exceptionally easy to operate, while at the same time it is provided with all of the requisites of the usual shower bath and a shallow plunge bath, the latter having a de th as great as the thickness of the wall wil permit.
A further object of my invention contemplates the provision of a series of such bath closets in an apartment house, the
bath closets being located in adjoining rooms in the same partition wall which separates said adjoining rooms and being so located that the bath closets on succeeding floors over-lie one another.
I have shown one embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of one of the bath closets showing the parts ready for use; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing the parts in the same position; Fig. 3 isa horizontal cross-section of two adjacent bath closets, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion of an apartment house showing the bath closets of succeeding floors.
In the drawings, 1 is a partition wall hav ing a closet 2 therein. The closet 2 is provided with a door-frame 3 and a door 4 in the usual manner. It will be noted that the closet 2 is provided with side recesses 5. At the upper portion of each of the re cesses 5 there is located a hollow journal bearing 6 which is secured by means of screws 7 to the interior of the closet. Each of the journal bearings 6 is provided with a horizontal extension 8 to receive the end of a p1pe 9 bent in the shape of a bail and being provided with horizontal ends 10 for extending into the horizontal extension 8. The pipe 9 is connected at its center with a radially-directed pipe 11 which carriers upon its end a shower bracket 12 of the usual type. A pipe l3'conveys water to the extension 8 through one of the journal bearings 6, whence the water passes through the pipe 9 and the pipe 11 to the shower bracket 12. A pair of curtains 1 1 are designed to be supported upon the pipe 9 and upon the horizontal extensions 8, the curtains 14 being so arranged that while in use they extend around the two sides of the pipe 9 to the pipe 11 where the adjacent ends of the two curtains may be connected together by means of button fastenings 15. An eye 16 is connected to the pipe 9 where it joins the pipe 11, which eye has attached thereto one end of a chain 17 which passes over a pulley 18 carried in the top of the closet 2, the other end of the chain 17 being provided with a handle 17 and hook 18' which is designed to be received upon a rod 19 secured at its ends to the interior of the closet, the rod 19 being designed in part to be used as a towel rack.
The pipe 13 extends downwardly in the recess 5 to a position approximating the center of said recess where the pipe 13 is provided with a hand-operated valve 20 for controlling the supply of water to the shower 12. Beneath the valve 20 there are located two valves 21 which lead respectively from hot and cold water pipes 22 and 23. Beneath the valves 21 there is a valve 24 which controls the supply of water to a shampoo attachment 25, a bracket 28 being provided for supporting the shampoo attachment 25 when not in use. At the bottom of the closet there is located a pan 27 having a flat bottom 28, a flat rear portion 29, inclined sides 30 and a fiat front portion 30'. The rear portion 29 extends downwardly above the level of the floor and is rabbeted at 31 at its top portion to receive the lower edge of tiling 31 which is carried by the rear wall of the bath closet. The.tops of the two inclined sides 30 are also rabbeted at 32 in a similar manner and for a similar purpose. The bottom 28 of the pan is attached to a drain pipe 33, which connects with a trap 33 of the usual type. The upper front edge of the front portion is hinged at 34 to the lower rear edge of a rectangular receptor 35 which has a horizontal drain pipe 36 which leads to the pan located at the bottom of the closet which may be closed with a stopper 36 when it is desired to retain the quantity of water in the receptor 35. At the front of the receptor 35 there is located a handle 37 for convenience in elevating and lowering the receptor. 1
Reference being had particularly to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be seen that I locate two of such bath closets 2 and 38 in a single partition which separates adjoining rooms, the bath closets opening respectively into the adjoining rooms, the hot and cold water pipes 22 and 23 passing between the adjacent sides of the two bath closets. I also locate, in the case of apartment houses, bath closets of this type in serial order above one another so that vertical supply pipes 39 may be used for connecting with the hot and cold water pipes 22 and 23 running upwardly through the partitions between the adjacent closets. The outlet portions of the traps 33 are connected by horizontal pipes 40 with a vertical drain-pipe 41 run ning parallel to the pipes 39 located be tween the adjacent closets. The upper portions of the traps 33 are connected by means of horizontal pipes 42 to a vertical vent pipe 43 which is located adjacent to the pipes 39 and 41.
In the operation of the bath closet, when the closet is not in use, the pan 35 is folded upwardly against the rear wall 31; the curtains 14 are supported. in the recesses 5 upon the horizontal extension 8 and the horizontal portions 10 of the pipe 9; the pipe 9 is in a position in which it hangs down vertically from the journal bearing 6; and the door 4 is closed. It now it is desired to use the bathing apparatus in the closet, the door 4 is opened, the chain 17 is pulled downwardly by means of the handle 17 and the hook 18 is caused to engage with the horizontal rod 19, thereby moving the pipe 9 into a horizontal position. The pan 35 is then moved downwardly until it rests upon the floor of the room and the curtains 14 are moved outwardly upon the pipe 9 until the space above the pan 35 is entirely inclosed, the bottoms of the curtains falling within the pan. If it is desired to completely inclose the space above the pan, the curtains 14 can be buttoned together by means of the button devices 15. The water can now be caused to pass through the shower 12 by turning on the valves 21 to supply the proper mixture of hot and cold water to the valve 20 which conveys water of the proper temperature to the pipes 13 and 9, the water passing from the pipe 9 through the pipe 11 to the shower 12. If it is desired to take a plunge bath, the stopper 36 is inserted in the pipe 36 until a sufficient quantity of water has accumulated. If, however, it is desired to take merely a shower bath, the stopper 36 is removed from the pipe 36. The shampoo attachment 25 can be used at any time by turning on the valves 21 and the valve 24 and removing the attachment 25 from the bracket 26. The water which escapes from the pipe 36 is conveyed to the receptor 27 whence it flows through the trap 33 to the waste pipe 41, the trap 33' being vented at all times through the pipe 43.
The bathing apparatus is moved into its closed position by first moving the curtains 14 rearwardly into the recesses 5, then raising the pan 35 into a vertical position and finally lowering the pipe 9 by disengaging the hook 18 from the rod 19. The door 4 may then be closed to conceal the apparatus from view.
WVhile I have described my invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
