Be it known that we, GUSTAV FRITSCH, subject of the King of Prussia, and resident of Gross-Lichterfelde, near Berlin, Germany, and MAX BRUEDELIUS, subject of the King of Prussia, and resident of 40 Alt-Moabit, Berlin, Germany, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Automatic Repeating, Sporting, and other Small-Arms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic repeating, sporting and other small-arms and more particularly to the type of such smallarms in which the breech-block recoils to open the breech, the empty case being ejected through an opening in the breech frame and a fresh cartridge raised from a tubular magazine located beneath the barrel and fed into the breech by a pivoted carrier operated against the influence of a spring by the breech block on its recoil the carrier being returned by the spring to its normal position upon the closing of the breech.
The object of the present invention is to facilitate the re-loading of the magazine. To this end a device operated from the outside of the breech frame is provided for moving the carrier into the inner or raised position against the influence of its spring when the breech is closed and for temporarily locking said carrier in that position. Means are provided for temporarily bringing the cartridge checking device into operation so as to retain each cartridge in the magazine after insertion.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cover plate adapted to close the opening in the breech frame through which the cartridges are inserted, which cover plate, when opened, simultaneously moves the carrier into its inner or raised position and returns said carrier when closed. By this means the entrance of dust, dirt and water is prevented and an indication is given of the position of the carrier locking device. Vith this arrangement the movements of the locking device may effect the opening and closing of the cover-plate or the operation of the cover plate may effect movement and the locking and unlocking of the carrier.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the breech portion of a repeating gun showing the gun inverted and in position for loading, that is, with the breech closed, the last cartridge in the barrel, the magazine empty, the carrier locked in its inner or raised position and the cover plate open, and Fig. 2 a sectional plan thereof, Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the gun inverted and the parts in the position assumed after firing the last cartridge and just before opening of the cover plate to reload the gun the breechblock being in the rear position, the empty case ejected, the carrier in normal position and the cover plate closed. Fig. 4 is a detail View showing the connection between the locking device and the cartridge checking device, Fig. 5 a side elevation of the breech portion of the gun, Figs. 6, 7 8 and 9 are detail views to an enlarged scale of the carrier locking device and cover plate, and to prevent confusion the figures are shown in positions corresponding to those of Figs. 1 and 3, Figs. 6 and 7 showing the carrier in locked position with the cover plate in longitudinal section and plan respectively, and Figs. 8 and 9 showing in a similar manner the carrier unlocked in normal position with the cover plate closed.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings the barrel Z is shown in normal position with the last cartridge 79 inserted, the magazine is shown at 20 with the piston to the breech is shown closed by the breech-block is provided with an operating rod 70 actuated by a spring 70. The pivoted carrier f is shown in the inner position and the spring for returning the carrier to the outer position is shown at f bearing on one arm f. The other arm of the carrier is provided with a pivoted cam 8 adapted to engage with the breech block 70 when in its rearmostposition and to move the carrier f to its inner position to raise the cartridge to loading position on the recoil of the breech-block 7c. The pivoted cartridge checking arm is shown at c normally held clear of the cartridges by a spring 0. The trigger is shown at q and a safety bolt at a" sliding within the trigger guard n.
In order to facilitate the recharging of the magazine the carrier f according to the present invention is moved into and tem porarily locked in the inner position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 6 and 7 by a device operated from outside the breech frame. To this end a bolt I) may be provided sliding in a longitudinal groove in the breech frame having a cam surface 7' adapted to engage with a corresponding surface 0 formed on, oreferably, the longer arm 7 of the carrier f. The bolt Z) is provided with a thumb piece I) the stem of which projects through a slot in the breech frame. The thumb-piece Z)" is preferably provided, as shown, with a cover plate sufficiently long to cover the slot in all positions of the thumb piece 7) (see also Fig. 5). When the breech is closed the carrier f may be temporarily locked in the inner position so that the cartridges may be easily and rapidly inserted in the magazine by pressing the thumb-piece 7) forward, thuscausing the cam surface 1* to make contact with the surface 0 on the arm f of the carrier and thereby to oscillate the carrier 7 about its pivot against the influence of the carrier spring The magazine being charged the thumb piece 5 is pressed rearwardly thus removing the cam surface 1" from the arm f and permitting the spring f to return the carrier 7 to the outer position shown in Figs. 8, 8 and 9.
In order to prevent the entrance of dirt, dust and water through the opening in the breech frame through which the cartridges are inserted into the magazine a cover plate is provided which is suitably connected to the device for moving and temporarily lock 'ing the carrier in its inner position so that when the opening in the breech frame is uncovered the carrier is locked and when said opening is closed said carrier is released. For instance a cover plate in may be pivoted at h to the frame and connected by a pivoted link h to the bolt 6 so that when the cover plate It is moved in either direction the bolt 6 will be moved also and the thumb-piece Z) may be dispensed with. In this way an indication is also given of the position of the locking device or bolt 7).
Since the forward end of the cartridge checking arm 0 when the breech is closed is normally removed by the spring 0 out of the path of the cartridges as they issue from the magazine the bolt 6 is so formed as tom'ove the rear end of the arm 0 toward the outside so as to bring the forward end into position to retain the cartridges in the magazine after insertion. As shown, the edge 79 of the bolt 6 produces this efiect by compressing the spring 0 as the bolt 6 is moved into locking position.
Means are provided for locking the cover plate h in the closed position. For instance the safety bolt :0 may be conveniently utilized for this purpose the forward end of the bolt being adapted to engage over or in a groove in the cover plate /L.
If desired the thumb piece 6 may be dispensed with when a cover plate It is employed and a suitable thumb piece arranged on the cover plate 71..
The device for moving the carrier may be varied within wide limits and is not to be restricted to the bolt and thumb piece hereinbefore described.
2. In an automatic magazine small-arm having a carrier actuated by the recoil for feeding the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, independent means capable of operation from the exterior of the small arm for moving said carrier into its inner position when the breech is closed and for temporarily locking said carrier in said position so as to permit free access to the magazine.
3. In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination with a breech-frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, a cartridge car rier pivoted to said frame and actuated by the recoil of the breech block to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, of independent means capable of operation from outside said frame when said breechblock is in its normal position for moving said carrier into its inner position, and for temporarily locking said carrier in said inner position so as to permit free access to said magazine until said carrier is released.
4:. In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination with a breech frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame and actuated by the recoil of the breech block to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, and a checking device for periodically checking the eXit of cartridges from said magazine, of independent means capable of operation from outside said frame when said breech block is in its normal position for moving said carrier into its inner position and for bringing said checking device temporarily into operation, and for temporarily locking said carrier in said inner position so as to permit free access to said magazine until carrier is released.
5. In an automatic magazine small-arm the combination with a breech frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame, and actuated by the recoil to feed the cartrid es from the magazine to the barrel, and a checking device for periodically checking the exit of cartridges from said magazine, of a cam device adapted to engage with a rearward arm of said carrier, so as to move said carrier into its inner position to peanit free access to said magazine, means passing through said frame for operating said cam device and means for temporarily bringing said checking device into operation.

In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination With a breech frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, an aperture in said frame for the admission of cartridges to said magazine, a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame and actuated by the recoil to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, and a checking device for periodically checking the exit of cartridges from said magazine, of a bolt adapted to slide in said frame and when moved to bring said checking device into operation, a cam on said bolt adapted upon said movement to engage said carrier so as to move said carrier to its inner position to permit free access to said magazine, a cover plate for said aperture pivoted to said frame, means connecting said cover plate and said bolt so as to free said aperture When said carrier is moved to its inner position by said cam, and means located outside said frame for operating said bolt and cover plate.

In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination With a breech frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, an aperture in said frame for the admission of cartridges to said magazine, and a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame and actuated by the recoil to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, of a cover plate for said aperture and means operated by said cover plate as said aperture is uncovered for independently moving said carrier into its inner position, and means for temporarily locking said carrier in said inner position so as to permit free access to said magazine.

In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination with a breech frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, an aperture in said frame for the admission of cartridges to said magazine, and a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame and actuated by the recoil to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, of a cover plate for said aperture, a device for moving said carrier into its inner position, means for operating said cover plate and said device simultaneously, so as to uncover said aperture and to move said carrier into said position, and
means for temporarily locking said carrier in said inner position and said cover plate in the open position.

In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination With a breech f ame, a barrel, a recoiling breech-block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, an aperture in said frame for the admission of cartridges to said magazine, and a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame and actuated by the recoil to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, of a pivoted cover plate for said aperture and means operated by said pivoted cover plate as said aperture is uncovered for moving said carrier into its inner position and means for temporarily locking said carrier in said inner position so as to permit free access to said magazine.

In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination With a breech-frame, a barrel. a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame and actuated by the recoil to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, and a checkingdevice for periodically checking the eXit of cartridges from said magazine, of independent means capable of operation from outside said frame When said breech block is in its normal position for bringing said checking device temporarily into operation, and for moving said carrier into its inner position and for temporarily locking said carrier in said position to as to permit free access to said magazine until said carrier is released.

In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination With a breech frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame, and actuated by the recoil to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, and a checking device for periodically checking the exit of cartridges from said magazine, of a cam device adapted to engage With a rearward arm of said carrier, so as to move said carrier into its inner position to permit free access to said magazine, means passing through said frame for operating said cam device, means for temporarily locking said carrier in said position, and means for temporarily bringing said checking device into operatlon.

In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination with a breech-frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame and actuated by the recoil to feed the cart-ridges from the magazine to the barrel, and a checking-device for periodically checking the exit of cartridges from said magazine, of a cam device adapted to engage with the rearward arm of said carrier so as to move said carrier into its inner position to permit free access to said magazine, a cover plate for said aperture, means whereby said cover plate and said cam device are operated simultaneously to uncover said aperture and to move said carrier into said position, means for temporarily locking said carrier in said position and means for temporarily bringing said checking device into operation.

In an automatic magazine small-arm, the combination with a breech frame, a barrel, a recoiling breech block, a magazine located parallel to said barrel, an aperture in said frame for the admission of cartridges to said magazine, a cartridge carrier pivoted to said frame, and actuated by the recoil to feed the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, and a checking device for periodically checking the exit of cartridges from said magazine, of a bolt adapted to slide in said frame and when moved to bring said checking device into operation, a cam on said bolt adapted upon said movement to engage said carrier so as to move said carrier to its inner position to permit free access to said magazine, and to lock said carrier in said position, a cover plate for said aperture pivoted to said frame and means for operating said bolt and said cover plate simultaneously so as to free said aperture when said carrier is moved to its inner position.
15. In an automatic magazine small-arm having a carrier actuated by the recoil for feeding the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, independent means comprising a cover plate connected to means for moving the carrier and capable of operation from the exterior of the small arm for moving said carrier into its inner position when the breech is closed so as to permit free access to the magazine.
16. In an automatic magazine small-arm having a carrier actuated by the recoil for feeding the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, independent means comprising a cover plate connected to means for moving the carrier and capable of operation from the exterior of the small arm for moving said carrier into its inner position when the breech is closed so as to permit free access to the magazine, and said cover plate being adapted, when closed, to release the cartridge carrier and return it to its normal position for feeding cartridges to the barrel.
17. In an automatic magazine small-arm having a carrier actuated by the recoil for feeding the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, independent means comprising a cover plate connected to means for moving the carrier and capable of operation from the exterior of the small arm for moving said carrier into its inner position when the breech is closed and for temporarily locking said carrier in said position so as to permit free access to the magazine.
18. In an automatic magazine small-arm having a carrier actuated by the recoil for feeding the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, independent means comprising a cover plate connected to means for moving the carrier and capable of operation from the exterior of the small-arm for moving said carrier into its inner position when the breech is closed and for temporarily locking said carrier in said position, so as to permit free access to the magazine, and said cover plate being adapted, when closed, to release the cartridge carrier and return it to its normal position for feeding car tridges to the barrel.
