Laim Patent 1ro. 100,149, aamz Febuary 22, 1870.
The XSchedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sameA To all whom it may concern:
Be it known 'that we, JACOB W. HILL, of J eerson, Greene county, and THOMAS Ronn'rs, of Panora, in the county of Guthrie, and State ol' Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Rotary Steam-Engines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operationlot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this` specitication, and to the letters and iigures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawingsis a representation of my' invention, with one wall ot'thecylinder removed.
Figure 2 is a representation ol' the removed wall. Figures 3, 4, 5, and 6 are details. A Onrinvention relates to rotary engines, and consists,
mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement of the valves, piston-blocks, and steam-ports, designed to lessen the complexity and to enhance thc'eticien'cy thereof.
The letter A of the drawings designatesthe cylindrical case ot' the engine, arranged with suitable packing-rings between its inner walls and the rotating cylinder.
B designate the valves, arranged diametricall'y opposite to each other, and consisting each of a double gate, formed of two, plates hinged to the cylinder walls, and arranged in such a manner that, when closed by the action of suitable springs, a a, they form a salient angle in the direction ot'- movement ot' the piston-blocks I1 b, indicated by the arrow in the drawings. K c y These valve-gates are opened by the action of the wedge-shaped pistonlbltmk's4 b b in passing` through them, recesses being formed in the walls ofthe case to receive the hinged plates when the gates are opened.
1n order to enable these valve-gates to adjust themselves to the curve ofthe cylindrical walls of the case A and rotating wheel G, in their tlitierent posit-ions,
when openand shut, spring packing-plltes c c, are in- -trodneed in slots in each curved side, and so arranged that they will press outward against the cylindrical walls, and thereby render the valves always steam- The exhaust-ports are designa-ted by the letters le e. The steanrports marked e 'v open into the curved slots z z formed in vthe plane side m ot' the wheel C, near the outer edge thereof', and each about ninety degrees 'of the circle in lengt-h.
These slots open into the steam-chamber E, each just in rear of its corresponding piston-block. The plane face m of the rotating wheel is ground smooth between the ends ofthe steam-slots z z, fitting the openings ot' the steam-pipesl closely, and operating to cut otf the steam at the proper point of the circuit.V
The expansive force of the steam operating upon thev salient side of the valve-gate keeps it tightly closed until the steam-port passes beyond the end of` the slot, and the steam is cut ot't.y
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the shaft-wheel of' a rotary steam-engine, the wedge-shaped piston-blocks b b, when constructed and arranged to operate as specitied.
- 2. lhevvalve- `ates B B, salient fin the direction of rofaion, provided with the' expanding packing-plates c c, and operated by the springs a a', and the direct action ofthe wedge-shaped pistonrblocks b b, as specih'ed.
3. In combination with the valve-gates B B, the rotating wheel C, having the slots z z and eut-ottl face mm, when constructed and arranged to operate sub'- stantially as herein described.
v4:. The rotary steam-engine, herein described, provided with hinged valve-gates B, rotating wheel C, having wedge-shaped piston-blocks b b, steam slots z z, and eut-oli't'ace m and exhaust-ports e e, arranged to be always open, when constructed and operated substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the above, we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witf nesses.
JACOB W'. HILL.
THOMAS ROBERTS.
