THOMAS HESS, OF WEST PENN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 100,147, dated February 22, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN COUPLING CARS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS HEss, of Vest Penn, in the county of Schuykill, andState of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Oar-Coupling and'l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,-roference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and reliable self-coupling device; also an improved uncoupling apparatus for the same.
The invention consists of catch-bars, suspended below the framing at the ends of the cars, gravitating coupling-hooks, with curved ends, arranged to ride over and catch behind the said bars, and uncoupling levers and shafts, arranged to raise the coupling-hooks by I pressing the rear ends down, all as hereinafter more fully specified. v
'Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of acouple of cars coupled by my improved coupling devices.
Figure 2 represents an end view of one of the said cars.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts,
' A represents catch-bars, rigidly suspended from the timbers of the cars. These bars are so inclined that the ends of the coupling-hooks striking against them when the cars come together will ride up inclined planes.
B represents the weighted coupling-hooks, pivoted at G, and provided with rear extensions D.
The frontendsof these hooks are rounded, so as to ride up these inclines easily, and they are so arranged as to be suspended at the right height for the purpose when the cars meet.
The hook of each car engages the catch of the other.
Behind the pivots G are uncoupling shafts E, having tappets F and operating levers G, so arranged that by tnrning'the levers backward, the rear extensionsD of the levers will be forced down, and the hooks lisengaged from the catch-bars.
This coupling and uncoupling apparatus may be applied to cars having the common coupling devices, without either being interfered with by the other.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The gravitating hooks B B, provided with rear exten'sions,'in combination with the catch-bars A A, constructed and applied to the car in the manner shown, and the shafts E E, provided with tappets and handlevers, all arranged and operating in the manner'set forth.
