Be it known that I, DAVID MCBAIN SYME,

. a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nipple-Retaining Devices for Nursing-Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to nipple-retaining devices for nursing bottles, and the object is to provide a simple and elfective device which may be readily and conveniently applied to and removed from the bottle and which when applied will securely hold the rubber nipple so as to prevent its being accidentally pulled ofi the bottle by the child while nursing.

With the above object in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claim, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view of a nursing bottle showing my device inuse in connection with the rubber nipple; Fig. 2, a plan view of my improved retaining-device removed from the bottle, and Fig. 3, an edge view of the same.

The rubber-nipples used on nursing bottles are frequently pulled ofi said bottles by the infant, thereby spilling the milk. I have provided a very simple device for securely holding the nipple on the bottle comprising an open ring 1 of spring wire, which may be nickel-plated, if desired, to prevent rusting and also to make it neat and attractive in appearance. The open ring is formed at one end with an eye 2, by bending the wire as illustrated. The end of the wire is then bent back in rear of the eye in the form of a loop to constitute a fingergrip 3. The other end or the open-ring is formed with a hook 4, the wire after the hook is formed being extended over the wire of the ring to the inner side and then bent under the same to extend to the outer side thereof where it is formed into a loop 5 which constitutes a finger-grip for that end of the ring.

In use, it is necessary merely to place the device around the nipple after the latter has been positioned on the bottle and engage the hook with the eye. The hook cannot be accidentally disengaged from the eye and any pull on either the bottle or nipple only serves to wedge the latter more securely between the ring and the bottle. It may be readily unhooked when it is desired to remove the nipple from the bottle, the fingergrips facilitating the manipulation of the ring to either engage or disengage the hook and eye.

Both ends of the wire, while being bent to form coactive catching means, also have their extreme ends turned in to a position to abut other portions of the wire. This is for the purpose of protecting the jagged ends. Thus, it will be seen that the loop 2 has its extreme end 3 bent into abutting relation with the body portion of said loop 2. Likewise, the end 5 of the hook 4 abuts the main portion of the wire 1.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

A nipple retaining device comprising a single piece of resilient material bent to circular form, one end of said material being looped outwardly and rearwardly and inwardly to cont-act with the outer surface of the piece and then being looped outwardly and forwardly in the same plane with the first loop and the piece and having its end contacting with the first loop, and the other end being bent rearwardly upon and in contact with itself and having the doubled end bent upwardly and rearwardly to form a hook adapted to fit in the first named loop of the other end of the piece, the extremity of the doubled portion being bent rearwardly and inwardly and forwardly into contact with the piece whereby jagged ends are protected.
