To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB E. SHEEFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Payne, in the county of Paulding, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to agricultural implements and has special reference to an attachment for a walking plow of the ordiverted into a riding plow.

The principal object of the invention is to provide an attachment which may be ,readily applied to a walking plow so that a person may sit thereon and have suitable rests on either side of the beam for his feet, the rests act-ing'to hold the plow vertical.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for carrying the rests so that they may be adjusted in or out as the case may require thus enabling one of the rests to be used as a marker.

The invention consists in such novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow showing the improved device in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of such a plow with the device in position. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a gang plow provided with the invention. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the plow shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a certain hinge joint used in connection with the invention. Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 66 of Fig. 3.

The numeral 10 indicates in general a plow of the ordinary construction provided with the usual handles 11 and beam 12. Secured to the beam 12 by means of a clip 13 is a seat standard 1 1 whereon is positioned a seat 15. This seat is so arranged that it comes immediately over the body of the plow so that the weight of a person on the seat acts to hold the plow in proper position on the ground. Furthermore the clips 13 are adjustable along the beam so that the seat may be positioned in any desired relation to the plow point thus enabling a deeper or shallower cut to be made according to the requirements of the special case.

Adjacent the front of the plow there is provided a clip 16 which engages a standard 17 on the bottom of which is provided a wheel 18 which acts to hold the front end of the beam up. On each side of the front end of the beam 12 is a bracket 19 having a pair of spaced ears 2O wherethrough extends a pivot bolt 21. Between the ears 20 is pivoted the body 22 of a hinge member which is provided with a pair of parallel wings 23 extending in parallel relation to the axis of the pivot. It is thus seen that these wings are at an angle -to the plane rotation of the body about the pivot. Pivoted on a bolt 24 which extends between the wings is a stirrup bar 25. Each of the wings 23 is provided with oppositely disposed pin receiving openings 26 and the stirrup bar 25 has a suitable opening therein adapted to be brought to register with the openings 26 so that. a pin 27 may be placed through the openings in the wings of said stirrup bar, thus holding the stirrup bar in adjusted relation relative to its position on the pivot- 24. These stirrup bars 25 each extends downwardly and rearwardly of the outside of the beam 12 and to the rear ends of the stirrup bars there are attached brackets 28 each having a downwardly extending finger 29 which acts as a marker so that the plow may be guided in its next course across the-field.

It will be noted that by means of the connection to the bracket 19 the stirrup bars may rise and fall according to the nature of the ground and according to the pressure placed upon them by the feet of the person on the seat 15. It will also be noted that these bars may be brought in or out with reference to the beam 12 so that different widths may be marked and proper adjustment may be made for the feet of difi'erent persons.

In the form shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 6 two plows are provided each with the usual beam 12 and these plows are both of the common construction being provided with handles 11, said handles being removed from one of the plows for purposes hereinafter to be described. When two plows are used the attachment is placed on the outer sides of the respective beams 12 and as this attachment is the same in all cases the same reference numerals used in the previous construction indicate the same parts. The plows are connected at their forward ends by extension bars 30 which are attached to the clevises of one plow by bolts 31 and these bars are united at their ends and bent to form a hook 32 which engages a shackle 33 attached to the other clevis, the length of the shackle being sufficient to permit the proper positioning of the plows. Connecting the beams behind the clevises is a brace, device which comprises vertical members 34: held to the respective beams by clips 35. The ends of these members 34; are connected by adjusting bolts 36 and links 37, the adjusting bolts passing through the ends and being provided with adjusting nuts 38. The seat is supported on an inverted U-shaped standard 39 the legs of which are attached to the beams 12 of the respective plows and in place of the handle brace irons a bar 40 is attached to one beam, the same bolt hole which was used for the handle brace irons being used for said attachment. This bar is also attached to the remaining beam by a link 41 and to a bar 42 secured to the plow from which the handles have been removed by a link 43, the same bo-lt holes which were used to secure the handles being used to secure the bar 42.

In the operation of the device the wheel 18 is adjusted in the ordinary manner, the bolts of the clip 16 being loosened for this purpose and then tightened when the proper height of the front end of the beam has been secured, the seat is placed in position as previously described and adjusted for the proper depth of cut. The pin 27 is moved to the proper hole so that the Width of the furrow to be marked is allowed for and the device then used as an ordinary plow. The pressure of the operators feet on the stirrup bars keeps the plow from tilting over sidewise while the wheel 18 serves to hold the front end of the beam in proper relation to the ground.

There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this devicewithout departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it"is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. An attachment for walking plows com prising a bracket having projecting ears and fixed to the forward end of the plow beam,

a hinge member including a body portion pivoted between said ears, spaced wings projecting from said body and parallel to each other, a stirrup bar pivoted between said wings to swing in a plane parallel to the wings, adjustable means to limit the swinging movement of the stirrup bar, and a marker carried at the free end of the stirrup.

2. An attachment for walking plows provided with a beam, comprising a bracket, fixed to the forward end of said beam and provided with projecting ears, a hinge member including a body portion pivoted between said ears for vertical movement,

spaced wings projecting from said bodyportion and parallel to each other, said wings being provided with aplurality of alined openings, a stirrup bar pivoted between said wings to swing in a plane parallel to the wings, a pin disposed 'in a pair of openings to limit the swinging movement of the bar, and a marker carried by the free end of the stirrup bar.
