Description

N. PETERS. FHOTWLITMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D. C.
Ctiit gratte dient L Letters Patent No. 100,079, dated February 22,1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N Panam-FILTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these. Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, MONTGOMERY P. SIMoNs, of the city of. Philadelphia,'and State of Pennsylvania', have invented a new and useful Improvement in Faucet-Filters, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists of a faucet having a iltering chamber in front of the key, and the latterhaving three-way openings constructed and arranged in relation to the main water passage, and a supplemental water way, in such Aa manner that by a certain adjustment' ofthe key the said supplemental passage is closed, and the water passes through the main passage' and is iiltered; and when it becomes necessary to clean the filter the key may be turned so as to open the communication with the supplemental passage, and the main passage being also open with a fnllhead of water at the same time the sediment seeks an outlet through the former, whereby the lter is cleaned. By another changein the position of the key the main and supplemental passages are closed.
In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specificationl Figure l is a side elevation of the improved faucet, partly in secti0n.`
Figure 2 is across-section at the line a b of iig. 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the key through the openings l 23.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A is the faucet, which has a main water passage, a', and a supplemental passage, b, the latter being use d in cleaning out the settlin gs from the filter-in g chamber B, as hereinafter described.
The said chamber has a perforated plate, C, through which the water passes so as to keep outlarge particles of foreign matter, and also hold the felt or other iiltering media I) in position against the gauze E.
F is a three-way key, a cross-section of which is shown in fig. 3.
Gis the handle of the key.
AWhen the filter is to be,A cleaned the key assumes the position seen in figs.. 1 and 2, the handle G being represented in full lines, the main openings-1 2 of the key being in line with the main passage a, and communicating with the contracted parts l 2', and the. opening 3 being in communication with the supplemental passage b the water then washes the sediment-s so as to cause them to flow backward through the perforations d of the plate C, and through the supplev mental passage b-in their discharge from the faucet.
1n drawingwater through the faucetthe key is turned one-half around, the handle G assuming the position represented by dotted lines. Then the'solid part 4 of the key, as seen in iig. 3, closes the cornmunication with the supplemental passage b. Vhen the water is to bc entirely cut otf the key F is turned but one-fourth around, which brings the solid part 4 against the contracted passage 2.
rPhe water may be drawn for drinking and'ordinary ,purposes both at the same time, if desired, when the handle G is in the postionrepresented by full lines.
The faucet is made in two pieces A and A', screwed K together for the convenience ofv inserting the gauze pie-ee E. i
It will readily befseen that the faucet may be made with but little more expense than acommon faucet,
Iand. presents'the novel advantage of being cleaned
