To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MERBITT, residing at Avalon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for I-Iats, of which improvements the following is a specifica tion.

The invention described herein relates to an improved means for treating the scalp for promotion of the growth of hair and is hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a hat having my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the absorbent material attached to the supporting strip; Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating a modification of the supporting strip; Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively transverse sections of the forms shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

In the practice of my invention any absorbent material 1 such as blotting paper is secured to a strip 2 of flexible and preferably resilient impervious material, as card board or thin metal, preferably aluminum. This strip should be of such length that when its ends are inserted between the body of the hat and sweat-band 3 the middle portion of the strip will be held out of contact with the head, and preferably will lie against the inner surface of the hat. The

absorbent material may be attached to the supporting strip in any suitable manner as for example by gluing or pasting, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, in which case it is preferred that the absorbent material should not extend to the lateral edges of the supporting strip in order that the hat may not be injured by the medicament carried by the absorbent material.

In lieu of permanently attaching the absorbent material to the supporting strip, the former may be made in the form of a strip somewhat narrower than the supporting strip, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The edges 4: of the supporting strip are turned over onto the strip of the absorbent material, so as to hold the latter in position, but permitting its longitudinal withdrawal from and insertion into the strip.

As the supporting strip is made of thin material and the absorbent material is preferably so applied as not to extend under the sweat-band, the application of my improvement to hats will not render them materially smaller internally. The form of the strips and the manner of supporting them in the hats permit of the use of strips of any desired width and of a length suflicient to extend over the entire surface requiring treatment.

I claim herein as my invention:

The combination with a hat provided with a sweat-band, of a thin strip of impervious material bent to conform approximately to the contour of the hat and held in position at itsopposite ends by the sweat-band, and a strip of medicated material secured to the impervious strip and of such length that its opposite ends lie adjacent to but not in contact with the sweat-band.
