PAPER-TRIMMIG APPARATUS FOR PAPER-HANGERS USE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led A,February 21, 1914.
Patented June 16, 1914. serial No. 820,146.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, PIETRO SoARDiNo, a
p subject of the King of Italy, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Trimming Apparatus for Paper-Hangers Use, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to straight-edges for paper-hangers trimming tables, and its chief object is to provide an improved device which is mechanically held in operative position during the trimming operation but can be swung up and held out of the way when the user is adjusting the paper.
To this and other ends the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of elements hereinafter described.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a table equipped with my improved straightedge or trimming guide. Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 is an end view, of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on line 4`4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
The straight-edge 1() is arranged at the front of the table 11, and its ends are fitted between the inwardly extending arms l2, 13, of the transverse end-brackets or supports 14, 15, in which they are bound securely by means of binding bolts 16, 17, and wing- nuts 18, 19. The brackets 14, 15, extend forwardly from the straight-edge and at their front ends are provided with pivotpins 20, 21, extending into suitable openings in the end-edges of the table. At their rear ends the brackets are turned upwardly, the arms 12, 13, being formed on the upwardly extending portions, as shown. To permit easy removal of the straight-edge, its ends are slotted, as at 22, 23, to receive the bolts 16, 17. Hence, to release the straight edge it is only necessary to loosen the wing- nuts 18, 19, whereupon the brackets 14, 15 can be pulled olf endwise, the pivot- pins 20, 21 coming out of their sockets in the table.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the workman desires to adjust the paper for trimming he swings the straightedge upwardly on the pivots, as in dotted lines in Fig. 3, after which the paper can be readily adjusted and the straight-edge then swung down upon the paper, ready for the trimming, which may of course be performed by a knife, or a wheel-cutter not shown. If desired the straight-edge may be equipped with a handle 24, for example, on its rear edge. To hold the straight-edge in raised position a prop 25 may be provided, pivoted at the rear edge of the straight-edge to a depending finger 26 on a rearward extension 27 on the arm 12 of bracket 14. The dotted lines in Fig. 3 show the prop in use.
Inasmuch asv the trimming position of the straight-edge is fixed, the cut always occurs on the same line and hence would speedily groove the surface of the table, thereby impairing the accuracy of the cut. To 0bviate this feature the table is provided with a cutting bed under the front of the straight-edge to receive the cut. .This bed is preferably a strip of brass 28, fastened to the table in any convenient manner.
It is to be understood thatthe invention is not limited to the specific construction herein described, but can be embodied in other forms without departure from its proper spirit and scope.
I claim:
1. The combination of a trimming table, transverse brackets pivoted to the table and each having inwardly extending clamping arms, a straight edge having its ends extending Lbetween said arms and provided with slots, and binding bolts passing through the arms and the slots.
2. The combination of a trimming table having pivot-holes in its end-edges adjacent to its front edge, brackets 14, 15, extendingI rearward from said holes and having pivot pins 20, 21, extending into said holes, upper and lower clamping arms 12, 13, carried by the brackets at their rear ends and overlying the table, a straight edge having its ends embraced by said arms and provided with openings between said arms, andreleasable bolts 16, 17, extending through the arms and the openings to clamp the arms removably on the ends of the straight edge and hold thelbrackets in pivotal connection with the tab e.
3. The combination of a table, a rearwardly extending bracket 14 pivoted to an end-edge of the table at the front thereof, upper and lower clamping arms 12, 13 carried by the bracket and overlying the table,
the straight-edge between the arms, an exa straight edge hayng an end tted between In testimony whereof I aHX my signature the said arme, means for releasably binding in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
T tension 27 extending rearwardly from the PIETRO SCARDIBO' upper arm 12 and having a depending n- Vitnesses: ger 26 n rear of the straight edge, and a THOMAS J. BYRNE, prop 25 pvoted at one end to said finger. S. S. DUNHAM.
