Patented June 9, 1914.
Serial No. 825,289.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN DURAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in looks.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an automatic auxiliary locking means in connection with any form of bolt lock and the employment of which renders impossible, the unauthorized picking of a key-hole lock.
A further object is to provide an attachment readily applied to any form of sliding bolt lock and whereby the bolt is prevented from withdrawal from a point outside the door even by the employment of the regular key provided for said look.
A still further object is to provide an auxiliary gravity catch for the sliding bolt of a lock and positionable interiorly of the door and while readily disengaged from within, being impossible of disengagement from without, excepting by the employment of a separate auxiliary key especially designed therefor.
With these general objects in View and others that Will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the inner side of a door and easing having the invention mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lock with the front plate thereof removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the lock detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one corner portion of the lock detached, showing the present mechanism thereon and Fig. 5 is a special key serviceable with the present auxiliary lock.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the door 10 is illustrated as having the lock casing 11 secured thereto and properly positioned for engaging the sliding bolt 12 and spring catch bolt 1.3 thereof with the ordinary keeper M- mounted upon the side casing 15 of the door-way. Upon the top 16 of the casing as normally positioned upon a door and as herein illustrated, is pivotally mounted a gravity locking hook 17 being trunnioned upon the pin 18 of the lugs 19.
The sliding bolt 12 of the lock is provided with a recess or notch 20 while the front or cover 21 of the casing has the slot 22 therethrough, the slot being so positioned as to normally receive the free end 23 of said locking hook 17 and by reason of the weight of said hook and the relative position of its pivot pin 18, such end normally projecting through said slot resting against the plane side face 24 of the sliding bolt.
The recess 20 being of suflicient size to receive and seat therein the hook end 23, it will be evident that upon an outward sliding of the bolt to its locked position, said hook end will drop within the recess 20 and thereby retain the bolt against a return movement.
With the locking hook so positioned within the recess 20, it will be seen that even though the proper key is inserted through the key-hole 25 of the lock, that the same upon being turned, will be ineffectual in retracting the bolt but it will be also obvious that the usual sliding of the bolt will be rendered possible by the manual raising of the locking hook and its dis-engagementfrom the bolt recess.
From a point on the inner side of the door, it will be apparent that by elevating the hook 17 by the hand of the operator, the key may then be readily employed for unlocking the door but from the outside of the door it will be impossible for an unauthorized person to enter the house, even though such person is able to pick the regular locking mechanism of the door lock and even though he should be furnished with the proper key for said lock. It being desirable, however, for an authorized person to unlock. the door from the outer side thereof, it is designed to provide an auxiliary key-hole 26 consisting merely of a key-hole slot extending at a convenient point entirely through the door and so positioned as to receive therethrough the hooked key 27 for engaging with the side ring 28 of the locking hook I? and thereby elevating and releasing such hook from its engagement with the locking bolt.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms and modifications may be had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
hat is claimed as new is 1. A device of the class described, comprising a casing having a slot through the front wall thereof, a sliding locking bolt within said casing having a transverse recess adapted for alinement with said slot during the locked position of the bolt, an overbalanced locking hook pivoted to and having its free end normally entering said slot and engaging said bolt, a ring upon the side of said hook, and a key member adapted for withdrawing engagement with said ring.
2. A device of the class described, oom-- prising in combination with a door having a key-hole slot therethrough, a lock casing positioned beneath said slot and having a slot through the front wall thereof, a sliding bolt within said casing having a recess there in adapted for alinement with said casing and wall slot, a weighted locking hook pivoted upon said casing and having its free end normally projecting through said casing wall slot and engaging said bolt, a ring upon said hook, and a hook key adapted for reception through said key-hole slot in operative engagement with said ring.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
