FRANKzM. FORD, OF GUTHRIE, MISSOURI.
BROODER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK M. FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guthrie, in the county of Callaway and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Broeder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to broeders of that type in which lamps or other heating devices are not used, the object of the invention being to provide a broeder casinglso construct ed as to afford thorough ventilation, there being a hover of novel form wit-hin the bottom portion of the casingand which is made up of sections whereby the chicks can be fed readily when confined in the broeder during bad weather.
Another object is to provide a hover so arranged as to prevent the chicks from piling upon each other.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without depart ing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings z-Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the brooder, one position of the movable member of the hover being indicated by dotted lines. Fi g. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the brooder.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a casing of any desired proportions, the same being provided Wi-th a top 2 hingedly` connected to one wall of the casing, as shown at 3 so that, under ordinary conditions, this top can be swung to open position so as thus to admit sunlight into the upper portion of the casing. A Ventilating opening 4 is formed in the top 2 at one end and arranged within the casing adjacent its other end is a door opening 5 provided with a suitable closure such as indicated at 6.
Arranged upon the bottom of the casing Specification of Letters Patent.

l is a hover 7 consisting of two sections hingedly connected, as at `8. Eaehof these sections is made up of a frame consisting of side strips 9 and small cross strips 10, the hover being extended throughout the width of the interior of the casing but being spaced slightly from the ends of the casing, as shown. Arranged u )on the two frames of the hover is a soft abric cover 11 preferably formed of flannel, this cover being at tached to the cross strips 10in any suitable manner so that it can be easily removed when it is desired to wash it.
It is to be understood that when the chicks enter the opening 5, they will congregate under the cover 11 and as this cover is arranged close `to the floor of the casing `1, it will be apparent that the chicks will be prevented from piling upon each other. As one of the sections of the hover can be swung` upwardly, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig 1, it will be seen that the chicks within the broeder can be easily fed during inclement Weather, simply by elevating the movable section of the hover and dropping the food onto the bottom of the casing 1.
Importance is attached to the fact that the entire broeder is formed practically of but two parts, to wit, the easing 1 and the hover. Thus it can be manufactured cheaply and will not get out of order.
Vhat is claimed is The combination with a broeder casing, of a hover removably mounted upon the bottom of the casing and consisting of two sections hingedly connected, each section being made up of rigid side strips, cross strips secured upon the upper edges of the side strips and connecting said side strips, and a continuous fabric cover secured upon the cross strips and extending throughout the length and width of the hover, said cover strip being adapted to be folded between the hingedly connected sections when the hover is folded.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK M. FORD.
