INDICATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 2,1914.
. Application filed September 19, 1913. Serial No. 790,740.
To all whom it muy concern Be it known that I, Cani. G. VVEVAT, a nativeof Sweden, residing at Bordentown, inithecounty of `liurlington and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful improvements in Indicating Devices, `of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelatesto improvements in indicating devices and has particular application toa device for indicating the condition of a room, bath house, locker or similar place so that a prospective occupant will be advised as to whether the locker, room or bath house is occupied or open.
ln carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a device of the class described which will be operated from the` bolt of the door lock and which will be constructed in such manner that when the bolt is in lockingposition a signal, indicating that the room is occupied, will be dis-` played, while when the bolt is retracted, the signal displayed will indicate that the room 1s open.
`With the above and other Vobjects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling Within the scope of the claims.
ln the accompanying drawing;
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a door equipped with an indicator constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View therethrough. F ig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2, parts being shown in elevation. Fig. 4l is a perspective view of the plate.
Referring new to the accompanying drawing in detail, the numeral l designates a portion of a swinging door such as is employed to control the entrances to rooms, bath houses, lockers and the like.
The numeral 2 designates an appropriate form of lock set into a recess formed in the door and opening` onto the side edge thereof as usual. At the opposite sides of the door are the usual plates 3, 3 appropriately fastened in place and formed with key holes 4 alining with each other and with the key hole in the easing of the lock 2.
ln the present instance, a casing 5 is formed integral with the upper end of the plate 3 on the outer side of the door and has the front wall thereof curved in cross section and formed with a longitudinal sight openingor slotG. The opposite side walls ofthis casing 5 are preferably formed to provide guides slidably receiving the opposite end edges of a plate 7 having `the front face thereof contacting with the inner face of the front Wall of the casing and of a configuration corresponding to that of the front wall of the casing. The front face of the plate 7 `is provided with suitable indicia indicative of the condition of the room controlled by the door or the positions of the bolt of the lock 2 and, in the present in stance, has the words Open and Occupied formed thereon one above the other, the word open being disposed above the word occupied.
The numeral 8 designates the locking bolt of the lock 2, such bolt being adapted for sliding movement to locking and unlocked positions. In this instance, the connection between the plate 7 and the locking bolt 8 comprises a vertical bar 9 capable of sliding movement within an opening formed in the upper wall of the casing of the lock 2 and having the lower end thereof pivotally connected to the upper extremity of a link 10, the lower end of the link being pivoted to the locking bolt 8 as at 11. The upper end of the bar 9 is bent at right angles to itself as at 12 and disposed within a recess 13 formed in the door above the lock easing and contiguous the recess receiving such casing. A vertical rod lll is mounted for sliding movement within a passage l5 formed in the plate 3 on the outer side of the door and establishing communication between the casing 5 and the recess 13. The lower end of the rod let is bent at right angles to itself as at 16 and rests upon the right angular end portion l2 of the bar 9, while the upper end of suoli rod is disposed within the casing 5 and bent to provide alip 17 upon which rests a lug 1S formed on the rear face of the plate 7.
In operation, when the key is inserted within the key hole of the lock and the bolt retracted or drawn into the casing, the link 10 assumes an inclined position and so permits the bar 9 to gravitate whereby the rod 11i and the plate 7 are lowered sothat the word Open on the front face of the plate 7 is visible through the sight opening G in the casing 5. On, the other hand, when the bolt is projected into locking position, the link l0 is disposed in a vertical plane and in moving to the vertical leaves the bar 9 whereby the rod 14e and the plate are moved upwardly so that the word Occupied on the front face of the plate is visible through the sight opening G. Thus, a prospective occupant will be advised as to the condition of the room or locker.
TWhile I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that l do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modilication and variation may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
l. ln an indicating device, the combination with a. lock adapted for sliding movement, of a casing having a sight opening therein, a plate slidably mounted within said casing and having indicia thereon indicative of the positions of the bolt, connections between said bolt and plate whereby the plate will be moved in accordance with the movement of the bolt, said connections comprising a bar capable of vertical move ment, a linl; connecting the lower end of said bar with said bolt, a rod operable from said bar, and a connection between said rod and plate.
2. ln an indicating device, the combination with a door lock including` a bolt adapted for sliding movement, of a casing secured to the door in proximity to the lock and having a sight opening therein, a plate slidably mounted within said casing and having indicia thereon indicative of the positions of the bolt and visible through said sight opening, a rod capable of vertical sliding movement, a connection between the upper end of said rod and plate, a bar adapted for vertical movement and having the upper end thereof in engagement with said rod, and a link connection between the lower end of said bar and said bolt whereby the plate will be moved in accordance with the movement of the bolt.
ln testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
