My invention relates to bed-davenports, and has particular reference to improve ments upon the construction disclosed n my former United States Letters Patent Nos. 993,691 and 1,034,253, issued May 30,- 1911, and July 30, 1912, respectively.
One of the objects of my present invention is the provision. of improved means for controlling the folding and unfolding movements of the inner bed-frame section within the seat-frame or associated carrying part, whereby to simplify and cheapen the construction thereof and enhance its elliciency.
A further object of my invention is the provision of improved means for locking the two outer major bed-frame sections 111 spaced folded relation during a folding or unfolding of the bed-frame, said means being automatic in its operation and also operable to brace the supporting standards at the outer end of the bed-franie when such frame is unfolded.
Further objects will be apparent from the following detailed description.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which,-

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates one of the duplicate opposite ends of a davenport frame between which a back (not shown) and a seat-frame 2 are mounted. lhe seat-frame 2 comprises, in the present instance, the opposite ends 3, the frontpiece 4, and the top-piece 5, and is connected at its ends to the ends of the davenport frame by any suitable form of tumbling means to permit a half turning of the seatframe from its closed position to the in verted position shown, or vice versa, as is well understood in the art.
The seat-frame carries the bed-fra1ne, which comprises, in the present instance, the inner, intermediate and outer major sections 6, 7 and 8, respectively, which are of substantially equal length and adapted to fold one over another within the seat-frame, as indicated in Fig. 5, or to be opened out into horizontal alinement, as indicated in Fig. 1. 'l he sections 6 and 7 are pivotally connected at each side thereof by a pair of links 9, which are pivoted together upon a suitable support 10 rising from the rear edge of the top piece 5 of the seat-frame, when such frame is in inverted position, while the adjacent ends of the side portions of the sections 7 and 8 are foldably connected by links 11. A leg 12 is attached to each side of the frame section 7 at its pivotal point of connection to the respective link 11, and a leg 13 is pivotally attached to each side of the bed-frame section 8 adjacent to its forward or free end to cooperate with the seat-frame in supporting the bed-frame in its unfolded position. The legs 12 and 13 are adapted to fold rearwardly, or toward the scat-frame, against the under sides of the respective bed frame sections to which attached. Upon a folding of the bed-frame, the outer section 8 is folded over the section 7 with the links 11 acting as spacing members for said sections, and the sections 7 and S, as thus folded, are then folded over the inner section 6 with the pairs of links 9 serving to space the folded sections, as shown in Fig. 5. As the sections 7 and 8 are folded over the section 6 the pairs of links 9 have a partial breaking action to permit such links to move slightly out of alinement, as indicated by the folded position of said links in Fig. 5, and then to act as a lever in lowering the attached end of the inner bed-frame section 6 within the seat-frame. F or a more complete description of the construction and folding and unfolding movements of the bed-frame, reference is made to my said former Letters Patent No. 993,691.
()ne of the features of my present invention consists in the provision of means for effecting a uniform lowering of the free end of the bed-frame section 6 with the inner or pivoted end thereof during a folding of the bed-frame, and which is adapted to guide the movement of the free end of such bedframe section to its unfolded position upon a swinging of the pairs of links 9 to horizontal position. To accomplish this I pivot an end of a link 1% to each side of the bed frame section 1 adjacent to its free end, as at 15, and pivot the opposite end of such link, as at 16, to a pivot plate 17, which is secured to the inner side of the adjacent seatframe end, said plate being disposed in a slot 18, which is provided in the adjacent end of the seat-frame top 5. When the bedframe is in its unfolded position the pivot 16 of each link 1% is nearer to the frontpiece t of the seat-frame than the pivot 15 so that the links will stand in inclined position when supporting the free end of the inner bed-frame section in the raised or unfolded position shown in Fig. 1. Upon a swinging of the inner end of the bed-frame section 6 to its lowered or folded position, the free end of such section will swing down in substantial uniformity therewith by reason of the lowering movement of the links 14, as shown by the dotted line position in Fig. 1. When the section 6 and links 14: are in their folded position the pivot 16 of each link stands below the pivot 15 thereof, due to a stopping of the lowering movements of the link, by contact with an end of the slot 18, before the section 6 has lowered into radial alinement with the pivots 16, thus preventing said section and the links from assuming a dead center position, and permitting an end thrust upon the section 6 in the direction of the pivots 16 to force the links 1 to their raised positions. It is thus evident that when the bed-frame parts, upon an unfolding movement thereof, have assumed the dotted line position shown at the left of Fig. 1, the major section 7 and the pairs of links 9, which then stand in alinement, will, upon a continued unfolding movement thereof, act as a lever upon the inner section 6 to force it rearward and upward to the full line position shown in such figure, the links 1 guiding the raising movement of the rear or free end of such section.
Pivoted to each leg 13 of the bed-frame, adjacent to its pivot, as at 19, is a hooked section-spacing arm 20 which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 21 in which works a guide pin 22 projecting from the respective side of the bed-frame section 8 at the rear of the leg pivot, and has at its free end a tapered nose 23, which terminates at its inner end in a hook 24. hen the legs are in operative or frame supporting position the arm 20 acts as a brace therefor, the pin 22 of the frame then standing in a laterally ofiset portion a of the slot 21, as shown by the dotted line position of said arm at the right hand end of Fig. 1. The opposite end of the slot 21 is provided with a laterally tapering cam portion b, which, when the frame section 8 is folded over the frame section 7 and the associated leg 13 is folded against the frame section 8, coacts with the respective pin 22 to hold the hook 24E of the arm 20 into en agement with a registering pin 25 projecting outward from the sides of the frame section 7 adjacent to their rear ends, as shown by full lines in Fig. 1. In folding the legs 13 and bed frame section 8 over the bed-frame section 7 the legs 13 are held slightly withdrawn from complete folded position relative to the frame 8 until the hooked ends of the arms 20 have been moved into register with the pins 25, as the final portion of the folding movements of the legs 13 against the section 8 will then cause the arm hooks 24 to move into engagement with the pins 25, due to the swinging movement of each arm 20 under the camming action of the pin 22 and coacting portion 6 of the arm slot. To release the engagement of the arm 20 and. pins 25 it is only necessary to impart an initial opening movement to the legs 13 relative to the frame section 8, as the pin 22 and slot portion 6 then coact to eflect a swinging of the free ends of the arms 20 from hooked engagement with the pins 25.
To prevent an accidental releasing of the arms 20 from hooked engagement with the frame pins 25 when the frame parts are in complete folded position, the free or hooked end portion of each arm 20 has a gravity catch member 26 pivoted thereto, which member has one end portion provided with a hook 27 (see Fig. 7) for movement into or out of hooked engagement with the associated frame pin 25 when the arm 20 is in hooked engagement therewith, and has its opposite end portion weighted whereby the pin engaging and releasing movements of the member 26 are automatically controlled by the gravity action of the weighted end of such member at predetermined points in the folding and unfolding movements of the bed-frame. A pin 28 projects from the arm 20 and works in a segmental slot 29 in the weighted end portion of the catch member 26 to limit the oscillatory movements thereof relative to the arm 20. When the hooked end of the catch member 26 is in engagement with the frame pin 25, the hooked end of the arm 20 is prevented from moving out of engagement with said pin. When the frame sections 7 and 8 stand in the horizontal position shown by full lines in Fig. 1, the catch member 26 stands in full released position relative to the associated frame pin 25, and when such frame sections have been moved to substantially the vertical position shown by dotted lines at the left hand end of Fig. 1, the catch member 26 is moved into locking engagement with the frame pin 25 by gravity action and maintains such locked position during the continued folding movement of the frame parts relative to the seat-frame, thus preventing an accidental disengagement of the hooked arms 20 from the frame hooks 25 during such folding movements of the bed-frame, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and by full lines in Fig. 5.
A brace link 30 is pivoted at one end to each leg 12 adjacent to its pivot and has its opposite end portion provided with a slot 31 through which a pin 32 on the associated side of the frame section 7 works. The slot 31 has an offset portion at its outer end which coacts with the pin 32 to normally maintain the link 30 in leg bracing position when the bedframe and legs are in unfolded position.
Each of the outer legs 13 is braced transversely of the bed-frame by a brace-bar 33, which attaches at one end to the leg, preferably adjacent to its lower end, and has its opposite end hinged to the outer end or cross-piece of the frame section 8 for longitudinal swinging movements relative thereto, thus enabling the leg and brace to have free folding movements relative to the frame. The hinge connection between the frame end and each brace is shown as comprising a strap 34, which is bent upon itself with its ends attached to the horizontal flange 8 of the frame end and with its loop projected loosely through a registering slot 35 in the brace bar to permit such parts to have free relative pivotal movements. This provides a simple and eflicient brace for the front legs. This feature of my invention is not claimed herein but forms the subject matter of a copending application for which Letters Patent No. 1,071,927 issued Septemher 2, 1913.
In the folding of a bed-frame embodying the features of my present invention from its unfolded position, the outer end section 8 thereof is first raised and folded over the section 7 with the links 11 standing in upright position and serving to space said sections apart. During such folding movement of the section 8, the operator releases the engagement of the cam ends a of the hooked arm slots 21 from looking engagement with the frame pins 22 and then folds the legs 13 against the under side of the frame section 8, such folding movement of the legs 13 relative to the frame moving the arms 20 to substantially the position shown, thus permitting the hooked ends of such arms to move into hooked engagement with the respective pins 25 on the frame section 7. The space between the sections 7 and 8, when in folded position is determined by the thickness of the mattress used, as the mattress between such sections is of double thickness due to the doubling of the outer end portion thereof. Then the frame parts 7, and 8, upon a continued folding movement thereof, have been moved to substantially vertical position, the catch members 26 will then act by gravity to move into locking engagement with the respective frame-pins 25 to prevent a disengagement of the arms 20 from such pins during the remainder of the folding movements. As the inner link 9 of each pair swings downward relative to the seat-frame the inner bed'frame section 6 is drawn forward and downward thereby, the supporting link 1 1 at the rear end of such section permitting a corresponding movement of such end. It is evident that upon an unfolding movement of the bed-frame, the inner section 6 thereof will be forced to its upright position by the lever action of the pairs of links 9 and remaining bed sections, and that upon a forward swinging of the bed sections 7 and 8 from vertical to reclining position, the catch members 26 will automatically remove to release the frame pins 25, and also that a slight raising of the legs 13 from their folded positions relative to the frame sections 8 will cause a swinging of the lower hooked ends of the section spacing arms 20 from engagement with the pins 25, thus leaving the frame section 8 free to be unfolded relative to the section 7. When the sections 7 and 8 are in unfolded position the legs 12 and 13 are lowered to support the same.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. The combination with a bed-frame having relatively foldable sections, of a member carried by one of said sections for sliding movements relative thereto and having a part adapted to be moved into hooked engagement with a part of the other section connection in when "the sections are in predetermined po-- sitions of relative adjustment, and means attached to said member and to the section carrying the same and adapted when moved relative to such section to effect a movement of sald member into or out of engagement with the section part.
2. The combination with a bed-frame having sections foldable one over the other, of a member pivoted to one section, a hooked arm pivoted to said member and having cam connection with the section to which said member is pivoted and movable into or out of hooked engagement with a part of the other section when said member and the section to which it is pivoted are relatively moved and the two sections are in predetermined positions of their relative adjustment.
3. In a folding bed, a multiple section bed-frame having at least two sections foldable one over the other, a hooked member in pin-and-slot connection with one of said sections to adapt it to have sliding movements relative thereto, and having a por tion adapted to interengage with a part of the other section, and a control part attached to both said member and the section carrying it and movable relative to such section to cooperate with said pin-and-slot guiding the movements of said member.
4. In combination, a multiple section bedframe, two sections foldable one over the other, a member pivoted to one section, a hooked arm pivoted to said member and having pin-and-cam-slot connection with the section to which said member is pivoted, whereby an oscillatory movement of said member will impart a rocking movement to said arm to move it into or out of hooked engagement with a part of the other section when such sections are in folded position.
In combination, a bed-frame having sections thereof foldable one over the other, a supporting leg pivoted to the outer section, a member pivoted to said leg and having pin-and-slot connection with the section to which the leg is pivoted and operable to relatively brace the leg and section when the frame is in unfolded position and to interengage with a part of another section of the frame when the leg and such sections are in folded relation.
6. In combination, a bed-frame having sections foldable one over the other, a supporting leg pivoted to one of said sections, a member pivoted to said leg and having a cam slot therein, a pin projecting from the section to which said leg is attached and working in said slot to cooperate with said leg to guide the movements of said member relative to the section, said member being adapted to relatively brace the leg and attached section when in unfolded position and to automatically move into hooked engagement with a part of another section when said sections and leg are being moved into folded relation.
7. In combination, a bed-frame having sections foldable one over the other, a lever member pivotally attached to one section, an arm pivotally attached to said member and having relatively movable connection With the section to which said member is attached and being movable into and out of hooked engagement with a part of another section by a relative movement of said member and the section to which it is attached when the sections are in folded relation, and means for locking said arm in its section engaging position.
8. In combination, a bed-frame having relatively foldable sections, a member carried by one section and movable into hooked engagement with a part of another section when the sections are in folded relation, and means automatica ly operable to lock said member in section engaging position during a predetermined portion of the folding movements of the bedframe.
9. In combination, a bedframe having relatively foldable sections, a member carried by one sectionand movable into hooked engagement with a part of another section when such sections are in folded relation, and means automatically operable to lock said member in section engaging position during a predetermined portion of the fold ingof the bed-frame and to move into position to permit a releasing of said member from the engaged section during another portion 'of the folding or unfolding movements of the bed-frame.
10. In combination, a bed-frame having relatively foldable sections a member car ried by one section and movable into hooked engagement with a part of another section when such sections are in folded relation, and catch means movable by gravity action to lock the member against disengagement from the engaged section during a predetermined portion of the folding or unfolding movements of the bedframe and to move to position to permit a releasing of said member and the engaged section when the body frame is in another portion of its folding or unfolding movements.
11. In combination, abedframe having relatively foldable sections, means carried by one section and automatically movable i to locking engagement with another sec-- tion when the'sections are in predeterminedfolded relation, and a catch member automatically operable to lock said means in section engaging position during a portion of the folding movements of the bed-frame.
12. In combination, a bedframe having relatively foldable sections and a supporting leg for one section, a member'pivoted to said leg and having pin and slot connection with the section to which the le is attached said member being automatica lly movable into hooked engagement with a part of another section by a relative movement of said leg and the section to which it is attached when the bed sections, which are connected by said member, are in folded relation, and a catch member automatically operable to pre vent a disengagement of said member and the engaged section during a predetermined portion of the folding movements of the bed-frame and automatically operable to move to position to permit a disengagement of said member and section when the sections are at a predetermined point in the unfolding movement of the bed-frame.
13. In combination, a bed-frame having sections foldable one over another, a supporting leg for the outer section, means attached to said leg and the associated section and operable to relatively brace the leg and attached sections when in unfolded relation and movable into hooked engagement with a part of another section when the sections are in folded relation and the leg and attached section are relatively moved, and a catch member carried by said means and movable by gravity action into position to lock said means in engagement with the engaged section when the bed-frame sections are in predetermined positions of their folding movements and to move to a position to permit a releasing movement of said means with the engaged section when the sections are in another position of their folding movements.
