IMPRCVEMENT IN SPRING lBED-BOTTOMS.

To all whom it may concer-n:

Be it known that I,CHAnLns GLENN, of the city oi'- Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and Sta-teef Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms;A and 1 do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part ot' this-specification,- in which- Figurevl is a perspective representation of my improved spring bed-bottcm.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of a section of 'one of the bedsteadV-rails.' My improvement consists in making'thebed-bottom of strips or slats offsnflciently hard and elastic wood, united together or in one piece at or near the middle of tbe bed-bottom, and separated toward the head and foot of the bed,4 some of the slats (preferably alternate ones) being arched so that their extremities support the bottom, and the other slats being dat, or only slightlyarohed', so as to form the bottom for the bed, the latter being supported by means of a cross-strip near each end, interposed between the alternate slats so as to be above the arche'd slats and below the others.

The spring bottom is made ot' any kind of' wood possessing suicient strength and elasticity. lhe board out of which it is to be made may be of uniform thickness throughout, and is sawed down' from either end toward the middle into narrow strips or slats, b c b c, 85o., ofnniform width, a portion in the middle, extending across the bed, being left whole. The kerf or space between the slats should be wide enough to prevent the slats touching each other at'the edges.

. The piece thus cut is steamed and pressed, in any usual manner, so as to turn down both extremities o f each alternate slat l) into the shapeof a circular or elliptical arc, giving as much spring to thearc as may be desired. The other slats, c, are either -left flat, or

preferably' may be slightly curved in lthe saine direcl tion.

' By the process of steaming and pressing, as is well known, the wood will retain this shape when dry;

A transverse strip of' Wood, d, of' the same length as the 'widthnot the bed-bottom, is then placed be- Itween the alternate slats 11 and c, and pressed uptoward the middle of the bed-bottom, one such strip being inserted from each end.

These strips ll are pressed up more or less near to the middle ot' the bed as may be desired,`the degree ot' spring of the bottom being regulated by the position ofthe transverse strips, which are fastened by ar bolt or pin, e, at each end to the'outside slats.

A piece of cork, India rubber, or other similar substance, e', fastened to the cross-strip or to each' Slat, is interposed between the slats and the transversel strips d, to prevent a creakug noise when the bed-bottom springs.

The bed-bottom may be made of one piece of Wood, or of several pieces placed side by side, which'will be kept in position to the transverse strip il, or, if preferred, by screwing the separate pieces vto an additional cross-piece placed under the bed-bottom.

. The extremities ofthe arched slats crest on the rails, at the head and foot ofthe bedstead, in mortisesf cut therein, or in metallic shoes, g,'sex'ewed on the rails ofthe bedstead, or let into' mortises therein. The.

bottom of these shoes g or mortises f (if shoes are not used) are lined with cloth, leather, lor other suitable substance, to prevent a creaking noise.

The ladvantages of this improvement are: great simplicity and cheapuess of construction, and great uniformity of spring, combined with increased -elasticlty. They are also veryeasily cleaned, and are not liable to get'out of order.
