To all whom it may 0022mm Be it known that l ll ittlrivni lV. ll i-vrson, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of tlanicsttmn, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New 1' orli, have invented certain new and useful improve ments in Homellranles of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification The invention. relates to improvements in sliding screens for windows and sii'nilar openings, and is slmwn with my innirovcd guide-strip but may be used with any suit-- able guide-stri and the object of the improvement is first, to provide a sheet metal. cap for each end of the outer edge of the vertical sides of a wooden ecreen frame, said cap being shaped to conform to the grooved lateral edges, and forms a metallic bearing fonone end of the holding spring and for the guide-strip; and second, to attach the caps by long nails which greatly strengthen the grooved edges of the frame sides; and the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts as described in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the screen frame with the capped ends for the grooved edges of the frame sides. The central portion of the screen being broken away both vertically and horizon tally. Fig. '2 is a crosswise sectional. view of one of the grooved frame sides at line W W in Fig. 4e, showing the guide-strip in position against the holding spring. 3 is a crosswise sectional view of the other frame side at line H X in Fig. 5, the guide-strip being shown in sliding contact therewith. at is a vertical sectional view of the frame side containing the holding SPTlngS at line Y Y in l 2 and an elevation of the guideetrip. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the edge of the frame side containing the spring, showing the cap fitted to the grooved edge and the free end of the holding spring bearing upon the same.
Like numerals of reference refer to correspo-nding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the screen frame which is formed. with the lateral frame sides 11 and 12 and top and bottom frame sides 13. The frame side 11. is formed with a deep lengthwise groove ll: ccnt'al of its outer lateral edge, thereby providing the groom sides 15 each side of said groove 14, which groove sides are obviously easily split and hrolten away in wood construction. 'lhe holding springs 18 are attached in the bottom of the groove l-l at one end by means of a suitable nail or screw. The holding springs 18 bend outward in their central portion and are preferably trough-shaped to [it the rounded surface of the guide-strip 1.7, and one end of the spring 18 is left free so that said end may slidably bear upon the bottom of the groove 1%. The frame side 12 is Pl'UV'ltlOtl with a shallower lei'igthwise groove 16 for direct contact with the guidestrip 17. The bottom of the groove 16 is preferably formed to lit the guide-strip 17 and slide easily thereupon.
The sheet metal caps 19 and 20 are providcd for a short portion of the face of each of the grooved ends of each of the lateral edges of the side strips 11 and 12. The cap 19 is formed to cover and brace the groove side and to conform to the exact shape of the groove id in frame side 11. The cap 20 is formed to lit the outer edge of the frame side 12 and to the groove 16 so as to fit closely therewithin. The outer sides of the caps 19 and '20 are preferably inset into the wood of the frame sides 11 and 12 so that they fit smoothl thereupon and slide freely without interfering with the window sash. The cap piece 1.) forms a metallic bearing for the free ends 21 of the holding springs 18 so that said ends will not gouge into or wear the surface of the wooden bottom of the groove 14:. thereby insuring the free action of the spring 18.
The caps '19 and 20 are attached to the frame sides 11 and 12 by means of long nails or screws 22 which are preferably countersui'ik into the caps 19 and 20 and thereby give a smooth outer surface. The nails or screws 22 extend down through the groove sides 15 of the deep groove 14 and the sides of the shallower groove 16 into the frame sides 11 and 12, preferably two or three nails or screws to each side with two of the nails or screws close to the end of the frame side, thereby effectually preventing the splitting or breaking of the groove sides 15 or the ends of the frame sides 11 and 12, thereby overcoming a great obstacle in the use of the deep groove 1 or even the shallower groove 16 in a wooden frame side.
It is apparent that the metal caps 20 at each end of the shallower groove 16 form spaced metal bearings for the guide-strip 17 which insure a. perfect bearing for the screen frame upon said guide-strip at each end and great ease in slidably moving the screen frame upward or downward.
I claim as new 1. In combination with a wood screen having lengthwise grooved outer edges, relatively short uetal caps secured at each side of the screen both at the top and at the bottom thereof to n-ovide metal bearings for the guide strips and reinforce the lateral frame sides of the screen at each of its four corners, each c'ap being of substantially uniform cross section throughout and 6X tending into its groove so as to contact with the sides and bottom walls of the groove, the cap sides being turned outwardly and inwardly to extend over the sides of the; frame and the front and rear faces thereof the free edges of the cap sides terminating 1 at points spaced from the inner edges of the frame sides.
2. In combination with a wood screen hav ing lengthwise grooved outer edges, relatively short metal caps secured at each side of the screen both at the top and at the bottom thereof to provide metal bearings for the guide strips and reinforce the lateral frame sides of the screen at each of its four corners, each cap being of substantially uniform cross section throughout and extending into its groove so as to contact with the sides and bottom walls of the groove, the
cap sides being turned outwardly and in wardly to extend over the sides of the frame and the front and rear faces thereof the free edges of the cap sides terminating at points spaced from the inner edges of the frame sides, and fiat springs connected to the screen sides having free ends which bear against the said metal caps.
