Description
R. H. DIMOCK.
PIPE.
APPLIOATION ULEB JAN. 22. 1913.
1,098,485, Patented June 2,1914J j.; Alorney Application filed January 22, i9 i3.
To ciZZ Iwhom it may concern Be it known that l, Bonner lil. Drinnen, a citinen oli the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri., have invented new and useful improvements in Pipes? of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to lthe class oft pipes and the provision ol a device of this character comprising a removable, reversible bowl. The advantages derived from a device such as this are readily educed. lt allows the same to be smoked almost continuously without lighting at each filling, and provides a pipe 'which may be readily cleaned and thus lrept in a sanitary condition. lt is apparent that a device ot this nature is especially adapted for use in automobiling or boating, however other purposes will be recognized as the description continues.
1Wit-h the above and other objects in view my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
ln describing my invention in detail, reiterence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote lilre or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view o the bodyl of the device showing the stem and mouth piece in elevation. Q, is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the bowl of the pipe removed. lhig. 3 is a sectional view of the bowl oli the pipe. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a plug which is used.
Referring now more particularly 'to the drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment olf .my invention the numeral 10 designates the body portion thereof which as is shown is substantially semi-spherical. 'lhe body portion may be constructed of any suitable material, either wood, bone or metal7 but in actual practice aluminum has proven very efficient. Formed upon the upper level face of the body portion is an upstanding projection 12, the sides 13 of the saine being cut slanting toward the base, as clearly illustrated. li/lfhile the projection may be formed integral .with the body portion as illustrated in the drawings it may also be secured thereto by any suitable means. lhe body portion and projection are further provided with a vertically extending opening ll. through Specification of Letters Patent. JlPgmpp-,Him JMH@ f5, 1914' which the smollre i'rom the bowl travels when the same is in use.
onsistent with the foregoing remarks l have provided an improved form of bowl, consisting of a body portion lll, the interior bore thereof being beveled at its extremities as shown at l5 lf'or providing suit-able cam faces :tor jt'rictional engagement with the slanting iace 13 of the projection l2. It is recognized that both ends of the bowl are constructed in exactly the same manner, thus allowing the saine to be reversed when it is desired, and when in place held in secure trictional engagement with the body portion of the device.
For the purpose of receiving a quantity of packing material 1T, such for instance as cottoiu the body portion l() is provided with a recess le the latter beingndisposed eentrally therein and communicating with one side thereof as is shown. nl stem 18 has connection with the body portion, and extends into a portion ol the recess 1G, so that its inner face engages the packing material and form a. comparatively tight joint. The stem also has a longitudinally extending smoke way 18 formed therein through which the smoke from the bowl of the pipe travels. The mouth piece 19 is further provided which is preferably iormed of amber or hard rubber, the latter also having a smoke way 19 formed ltherein and an eX- terior screw threaded extension Q0 in engagement with the stom. lilith this arrangement a pipe provided which is comparatively light, and in view of the fact that the parts are very simple, it may be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
l have provided a member 2l carrying a wedgeeshaped extension the latter being received into the lower end of the opening ll for normally closing the same. By proriding this removable plug it is recognized that the cleaning oit the pipe is :facilitated to an appreciable degree.
lhe reversibility ot the bowl is readily recognized. The tobacco is disposed in the same in the `usual manner, and after it has been smoked nearly out new tobacco may be disposed on top of this and the bowl reversed, thus continuously providing a `fresh smoke without lighting the pipe at each lilling. rllhis function makes the pipe very advantageous for the uses set it'orth and in view of the fact that its cleaning is facilitated, it can always be kept in a sanitary condition.
From the foregoing it is thought that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily recognized.
Having. thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A tobacco pipe comprising a body portion having an annular projection formed upon the upper surface thereof, the sides of said projection being beveled, said body portion and said projection having a centrally disposed vertically extending passage way therethrough, a plug inserted in the lower end of said passage way, said body portion further provided with an inwardly trans- ROBERT H.
