NTTD SATS JOHN L. SIBLEY, OF MIAMI, MISSOURI.
END-GATE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Jol-1N L. Sinner, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, have invented `new and' useful Improvements in End-Gates, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in end gates or shoveling boards for wagons.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an end gate which may be either locked in its closed position or retained in its open or inclined position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for detachably mounting the end gate or shoveling board on the wagon body, to permit the gate to be readily removed or attached as may be desired.
in the accompanying drawings -Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rear end ot a wagon body, showing the application of an end gate constructed in accordance with my invention, the gate being shown in its closed position in full lines and in its open position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end elevation ot the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan ot' the same with the gate open. F tis a longitudinal sectional view, showing the end gate in its open position. Fig. 5 is a plan ot the same with the gate closed. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View, showing one ot the hinges unlocked and swung to its inoperative position.
A wagon body is designated at A and includes the usual bottom 5 and side boards 6 6. Secured to the under side of the bottom 5 and directly below the rear end thereof is a transverse bar 7, the forward edge of which is disposed in rear of the wagon body. Longitudinal trunnions 8 8 extend from its ends.
My invention further comprises an end gate B which is toi-med from a plurality oi' boards 9 which are connected by spaced upper and lower transverse members 1() and 11, the ends of the former extending beyond the side boards 6 of the wagon body and having transverse openings 12 formed therein. Secured to the ends of the gate B are forwardly extending side flanges 155-13 which embrace the side boards 6 ot the body.
Secured to one end of the member 11 is a pivot hinge 14 which is 'formed with an opening 15 for receiving a trunnion 8. This hinge is disposed against a flange 13, and has its upper end laterally bent to form a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application iiled April 10, 1913.
Patented May 26, 1914. Serial No. 760,175.
In order to lock the hinge 17 against accidental outward swinging, a spring 19 is secured to the member' 11 for engagement with said hinge 17.
Attached to each side-board 6 in the body is an eye 20. A cord 21 has its ends, respectively, passed rearwardly through the openings 12 and connected to said eyes 20, the length of the cord being suiiicient to retain Athe end gates B in an upwardly inclined position. lihen'it is desired to close the end gate B, one end of the cord is drawn rearwardly and is connected to a respective eye Q0 by means of a strap 22, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
By means of this construction, the end gate B may be readily held in its open position or secured in its closed position. This construction also enables the end gate B to be readily' detached from or attached to the wagon body, as will be readily understood. Y
I claim The combination with a wagon body including side boards and a bottom, of a transverse bar secured to the bottom and having longitudinal trunnions extending from its ends beyond the Vside boards, van end gate, hinges carried by the gate and engageable with the trunnions, one of said hinges being pivotally mounted upon the gate tor detachment tro-m its trunnion, a latch carried bythe gate and engageable with the last-mentioned hinge for Vretaining the latter against accidental displacement, and means connecting the end gate and side boards for retaining the former in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof T a'liixmy signature in presence ot two witnesses.
JOHN L. SBLEY.
`Witnessesz J. F. l/Vnnsrna, JOHN L. BEERE.
