Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. KENDALL, citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in closures for vessels and more particularly to closures of the self closing type particularly adapted for use with powder cans although they may be used with advantage with bottles or other receptacles containing either powders or liquids, and the object of my invention is to provide a closure of the above described type, the valve or valves of which move to active or closed position by gravity when the can is in upright position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a closure having a plurality of per forations normally closed by a valve resting upon the outer face of the closure and over said perforations, said valve being movable by gravity in and out of operative position as the can is in upright or inverted position.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for limiting the opening movement of said valves and for insuring their proper seating when in normal position.
A further object of my invention is to so construct the valve or valves that during their movement to open position they will turn or otherwise swing out .of alinement with the perforations as well as away from the same, thereby giving an unobstructed passage for the powder or other contents of the receptacle.
With these and other objects in View, my invention will be more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and then specifically pointed out in the claims which are attached to and form a part of this application.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
The preferred embodiment of my invention, namely, that form shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive includes a metallic cap 10 adapted, as shown at 11, for threaded engagement with the threaded discharge nozzle 12 of a powder can 13. It will of course be understood, however, that this cap may be formed of celluloid or any other suitable material in place of metal and may be attached to cans or other receptacles in any preferred manner as I do not wish in any way to limit myself to the general structure of the closure, this invention consisting rather in the construction of the valve and such details of closure construction as are necessitated in order to adapt the closure for use with the valve.
The top 14: of the closure is preferably provided with a plurality of radially extending, substantially rectangular shaped depressions 15 arranged symmetrically with respect to each other as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and havingtheir central portions merged together, as shown at 16. The central portion of the top 14 is provided with a slot 17 and the end portions of the depressions 15 are provided each with a perforation 18 through which the powder or other contents of the can or receptacle may be discharged by inverting the can.
Coacting with the closure above described, is a valve which, as best shown in Fig. 6, includes a body member 19 having a plurality of spaced apart radially extending arms 20, said body member and arms being so shaped and proportioned as to permit their seating in the depressed portions of the closure and of such thickness as to preferably lie either slightly flush with or below the upper face of the closure. Each of the arms 20 has a portion stamped or otherwise depressed as shown at 21 to seat in the perforations 18 of the closure when provided with a valve stem 22 comprising a strip of metal or other suitable material rectangular in section and equal in width and thickness to the length and breadth of the slot 17 of the closure through which it passes. Ihe lower end of the valve stem is provided with a stop button or other suit able device 23 for limiting the outward movement of the stem 22 through the slot 17 this button or stop being secured to the lower end of the valve stem in any suitable manner as by passing the reduced end of the stem through the button and clenching or heading its terminal against the lower face of the same as shown at 24. This stem 22 is twisted slightly about its longitudinal axis in such a manner that during its passage through the slot of the closure, it will cause the partial turning of the valve to bring its arms 15 out of alinement with the perforations as shown in Fig. 2 to provide free passage for the contents of the can. Of course upon the return movement of the valve its stem counter-rotates it to cause the arms to seat in the depressions in the closure.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that I have provided an extremely simple and efficient form of closure having gravity operated valves for limiting the escape of powder or liquid from the vessel to which the closure is applied and for automatically closing the vessel when in upright position.
Having thus described the invention,what is claimed as new is:
1. A cover for receptacles including a cap having a plurality of openings, gravity operable valves seating over with said openings to close the same when the receptacle is in an upright position and means operable by movement of the valves from the openings to swing them out of alinement therewith.
2. A top for receptacles including a cap provided with .a plurality of discharge openings and with a slot, a valve having a valve stem movable through said slot, a plurality of arms seating over the openings of the cap to close the same, and means for rotating the valve stem during movement through the slot.
3. A top for receptacles including a cap having a plurality of discharge openings, a valve having arms normally closing said openings, means for mounting said valve on the cap to cause the valve to partially rot-ate as it moves toward and away from the cap.

6. A top for receptacles including a cap having a plurality of discharge openings, a valve normally seating over the openings mounted to move toward and away from the cap and means for swinging the valve into and out of alinement with the openings during such movements.
7. A top for receptacles including a cap having a plurality of discharge openings, a valve stem mounted for reciprocatory movement through the cap, and arms carried by the stem and adapted in one position of the stem to seat over the openings and close the same, and means for rotating the valve stem by reciprocation thereof.
8. A top for receptacles including a cap having discharge openings, a valve having arms adapted to seat over the openings, said valve being mounted for simultaneous reciprocatory and rotary movement, and means for controlling the rotation of the valve to bring the arms into alinement with the openings when the valve seats upon the cap.
9. A top for receptacles including a cap having discharge openings,a valve having arms adapted to seat over the openings, said valve being mounted for simultaneous reciprocatory and rotary movement, and means for controlling the rotation of the valve to bring the arms into alinement with the openings when the valve seats upon the cap, and out of alinement with the openings when the valve is moved away from the cap.
