CAN-SEALING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that; I, HENRY MAmox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bel.- mont, in the county of Pleasants and state of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Sealing Devices, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to improvements in can sealing devices and has for its object to provide a clamp by means of which a can may be held closed against the action of gases generated in the can.
Another object of the invention is to provide a resilient wire clamp adapted to be readily attached and detached from a can and whereby the top may be held securely to the can. And still another object of the invention is to provide a can having a removable cap with a member adapted to form an air tight closure between the can and cap and means whereby said can sealing member and cap may be held fixedly together. And still another object of the invention is to provide means whereby an ordinary preserving can may be quickly and securely sealed without the use of sealing wax.
With the above and other objects in view, which will be more fully set forth in the fol.- lowing specification, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a can showing my sealing means, Fig. 2 is an elevational view partly broken away, of a can having my device thereon, Fig. 3 is an end view of a clamp member, Fig. 41 is an enlarged detail elevational view of a clamp member shown partly broken away, and Fig. 51 is a sectional view taken on line AA of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a can having an inwardly inclined top 2 with a mouth or aperture 3 having a vertical flange t. Seated over the mouth 3 and forming a closure therefor is a sheet of especially prepared waxed paper 5, over which is seated the can cap 6. The cap 6 consists of a disk having a right angular flange 7 adapted to fit snugly around the flange 4 and wedge the member 5 closely thereto, there being three distinct points of contact between the cap 6 and top 2, one
being between the upper edge 8 01 the flange 1 and the inner horizontal wall 9 of the cap, another being between the lower edge 10' of the cap flange '7 and the upper surface 11 of the top 2 and the third between the contacting surfaces of the two flanges and 7. 'lhe sheet is laid over the aperture 3 and then the cap is forced down in place over the flange 4'. The clamp 12 is thenfixed into place on the can top and cap whereby the cap cannot be removed until after the clamp is removed.
The clamp 12 consists of a stout spring wire bent to form a pair of arms 13 and lt which spread outwardly from the downwardly projecting hook 15 having recesses 16 and 17 adapted to receive the flange 18 and shoulders 19 and 20 adapted to project under the edge of said flange 18. The ends 21 and 22 of the arms 13 and 14 are bent down to form hooks 23 and 241 having shoulders 25 adapted to engage the edge 18 of said can top 2. Intermediate of the hook 15 and the hooks 23 and 24: on the arms 13 and 14 are formed fingers 26 and 27 which are downwardly curved at their outer ends 28 and 29 to press tightly against the head 30 around the edge of said cap 9. The arms 13 and 141 have downwardly bent portions 31, 32, 33 and 3% where they cross said head 30 so as to press the cap tightly against the top 2.
The clamp 12 may be very readily fixed into operative position on the can but after once being fixed in place it cannot be removed without first spreading the ends 21 and 22 apart as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, when it will become instantly detached.
The above described device will seal a can against any leakage whatever "from its mouth, the clamp 12 holding the cap 6 tightly in place over the paraflined paper 5 and against the top 2.
It is to be understood that the above described can is not a part of my invention but is a can of the present time in common use, but my invention is embraced in the clamp 12, the waxed paper 5 and their use in combination with the can 1. By means of the clamp 12 and the waxed paper 5 the cap 6 may be securely sealed to the can 1 without the use of sealing wax, solder or other adhesive material.
Having now described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a can having a flanged top with an opening therein, a closure with an upwardly projecting bead, and a clamp having a plurality of ends certain of which are bent at right angles thereto and having cut away portions to receive said flange, said clamp being resilient, said other ends being slightly curved downwardly to engage said bead.

In combination wit-h a can having a flanged top with an opening therein, a closure with an upwardly projecting bead, and a clamp having a plurality of ends certain of which are bent at right angles thereto and having cut away portions to receive said flange, said clamp being resilient, said other ends being slightly curved downwardly to engage said bead, said latter ends being shorter than said first ends and terminating within the radius of said can.
4:. In combination with a can having a flanged top with an opening therein, a closure with an upwardly projecting bead, and a clamp having a plurality of ends certain of which are bent at right angles thereto and having cut away portions to receive said flange, said clamp being resilient, said other ends being slightly curved downwardly to engage said bead, said latter ends being shorter than said first ends and terminating within the radius of said can, said clamp having a plurality of bends adapted to contact said bead.
