UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. McMAI-IAN, OF MILTON, INDIANA.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 12, 1914 Application filed January 31, 1914. Serial No. 815,791.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. MoMAnAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chimney blocks and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and elficient chimney cap which will support a stack and at the same time prevent or assist in preventing the destruction of the chimney by the elements.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view showing a modification.
In the specific embodiment of the invention, 1 represents an ordinary chimney upon which is mounted a plate 2 formed of any suitable material and having a central aperture 3 to correspond with the opening in the chimney. The plate is provided with a groove or trough 4 extending around the same and an outlet groove 5 is led off to the edge of the plate so that all Water collecting in the grooves will be discharged therefrom, the groove 5 bein preferably arranged on the eaves side of the chimney.
Mounted upon the plate and connected thereto in any suitable manner is a monolithic cap 6 constructed preferably of cement or other suitable material and having an area of such dimensions as to lie entirely within the groove 4:.
The cap is provided with a central aperture 7 and has secured to its upper side by bolts 7 a pair of plates 8 and 9 between which is secured the flange 10 of a stack supporting collar 11 which projects above the plate 8 and has threaded thereon a collar 12. Upon this collar is mounted the usual stack 13 which is secured to the collar by rivets 14 or in any other suitable manner.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the cap has embedded directly therein the flange 15 of the stack supporting collar 16, thus obviating the use of the plates 8 and 9.
In both of the forms it is preferable to use the drain plate which is always larger than the chimney and overhangs the same on all sides but in case the plate is not used the cap body is of such dimensions as to overhang the chimney, thereby protecting the same from rain.
lVhat is claimed is l. A chimney block comprising a plate larger than the chimney and having a groove running around the same upon its top and an outlet for the groove, a monolithic body secured upon the top of the plate within the groove and having an aperture to correspond with the aperture in the chimney, said plate having an aperture to register with the aperture in the body, a threaded stack receiving collar having a flange upon its lower end and means for connecting the flange to the body, together with a stack removably mounted upon the collar.
2. A chimney block comprising a plate larger than the chimney and having a groove running around. the same upon its top and an outlet for the groove, a monolithic body secured upon the top of the plate within the groove and having an aperture to correspond with the aperture in. the chimney, said plate having an aperture to register with the aperture in the body, a pair of apertured plates bolted upon the body, a flanged and. threaded collar projecting through one of the plates and having its flange seated between the plate, and a stack removably mounted upon the collar.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
