To all whom it may concern:
to which it appertains tomake and use the Figure My invention relates to metallic barrels and consists in the constructions, arrangemerits and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
It is an object of my invention to provide a barrel which will be for all purposes lcakproof, and to this end it consists in an proved fastening for the barrel heads which will present no sharp corners to the metal,
but which will provide a smooth joint throughout. a
Another object of my invention is'to provide a barrel which will be of improved strength and which will consist of a minimum number of parts adapted for ready assembly; each of the parts being simple and economical of manufacture.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views. and in which is a vertical sectional view of a barrel made, in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an. enlarged sectional view of a corner of the barrel; Fig. 3 is an elevation of my improved clamping rin partly shown in section; and Fig. 4 is an eTevation of my reinforcing ring partly shown in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the body portion of a barrel made in accordance with any approved design and'method; and 2 designates the barrel heads which are.preferably of the dished type, as shown. The peripheral edges of the heads 2 are turned outwardly to provide substantially cylindrical walls, or
flanges, 3 adapted to fit snugly within'the ends 4 of the body'l. As compared with similar structures in the art, it Wlll be noted that the walls 3 and ends-4 are unusually deep to permit of being bent over, as hominafter explained. A reinforcing ring 5, flat or band-like in cross section, having rounded edges, as shown, and provided on its outer face with one or more l1orizontally-running corrugations (his fitted within the flange 3 and the metal of the flange is rolled into the corrugations, as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 2. An annular strengthening flange 7 projects inwardly. preferably from the lower edge of the reinforcing ring 5, and has its base shaped to follow the contour of the barrel head 2, so as to lie in contact therewith throughout. The flange 7 is enlarged vertically to provide a shoulder 8 in spaced relation to the inner face of the reinforcingv ring 5 against which the overturned ends of the bod portion and head flanges are adapted to a ut. These ends are preferably welded into the shoulder, whereby a strong and smooth joint is provided.
An outer clamping ring 9 having a corrugated inncr face 10 corresponding to the corrugations (3 in the reinforcing ring 5 is mounted over the outer ends 4 of the barrel body, and preferably shrunk in place. A protecting flange 11 extends inwardly from the upper edge of the clamping ring 9, and overlaps the reinforcing ring 5 whereby all the shocks and strains imposed on the joints during transportation and use are received by the clamping ring 9 and its flange.
In assembling the parts,.the reinforcing ring 5 is preferably inserted in place within the flange 3, and the metal of the flange rolled into the corrugations, after which the head may be fitted in place within the ends 4 of the barrel body, whereupon the operation of rolling is continued upon the ends 4.'

Shocks and strains incident to usage and imposed upon the clamping ring 9 are transmitted to the reinforcing ring 5 which re sists bending assisted by the flange 7, which covers a large area of the barrel head and thereby affords a protection from both interior and exterior forces.
I have shown and described preferred and satisfactory, constructions, but desire it to be understood that slight changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention, provided such changes fall Within theseope of the appended claims.
