WARREN B. WHITE, 0F NORTH ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO FRANK. W. MERRICK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
INSEAM FOR SHOES.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, WARREN B. IVHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Abington, in the county of Plymouth, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Inseams for Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention provides novel means for preventing the thread used in making the inseam of a welt-shoe from sawing or cutting through the between-substance as the stitches are being formed and drawn tight, and also provides for reinforcing the between-substance.
In the operation of sewing the inseam I employ a continuous cord, wire or the like, which I guide into the angle between the upturned lip or ange of the insole and the adjacent surface of the insole, and so interweave at the inner side of the between-substance with the connecting portion of thread between one stitch-hole and the next that, as the thread which has been caught by the hook of the needle is drawn by the receding movement of the needle in the form of a loop outward through the welt, upper, and between-substance, in the operation of forming a stitch, the connecting portion of thread between the preceding stitch-hole and the hole from which the needle has just withdrawn shall draw against and around the said cord or wire, and be prevented by the latter from sawing or cutting through the between-substance and so also that the final draft upon the thread shall be prevented from causing the thread to break through the between-substance.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which latter- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a partly completed shoe showing the relations of the continuous cord or wire to the stitches of the inseam. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view on an enlarged scale.
Having reference to the drawings, the upper of the shoe which is partly represented in the drawings is marked 1, the insole being marked 2, its lip 2, the welt 3, and 4 is the last to which the upper insole, and welt are shown applied in Fig. 2. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

stitches of the inseam are marked 5, 5, etc., and the cord or wire which I employ in accordance with the invention is shown at G. The cord or wire is guided and operated during the stitch-forming operation so that it is interwoven with the thread of which the stitches 5, 5, etc., are formed in manner that will be clear from Fig. l, and so that the loops of such thread at the channel-side of the lip 2a extend around the said cord or wire as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. As the thread is pulled outward through the awl-hole in drawing up and tightening a stitch, it renders past and around the cord or wire G, which does not become cut as the between-substance of the lip 2 commonly does in practice, and the cord or wire, in addition, withstands, without breaking, the final pull which commonly acts to break the between-substance. The cord or wire 6, interwoven as explained with the loops of the stitches of the inseam, draws down close into the bottom of the angle between the surface of the insole and the outstanding lip, so that it is not touched when the projecting edges of the welt, upper, and lip are trimmed ofl'.
Vhile for convenience in illustrating the nature of the invention I have shown the invention applied in connection with a lip that is produced by channeling the insole, it is to be understood that the invention is equally applicable in the case of insoles havingthe lips otherwise produced or formed, and also in the case of insoles in which an equivalent of the said lip is provided upon or attached to the insole.
What is claimed is* In a welt shoe, the combination with an insole having a lip, and the stitches of the inseam, of a cord or wire in the angle between the said lip and the surface of the insole and interwoven with the connecting portions of thread between succeeding stitch-holes so as to prevent sawing or cutting of the between-substance by the thread.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VARREN B. VIIITE.
