/' by Attorney CHARLES HAMMER, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNClR TO THE AMERICAN METAL CAP COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE oar 0R CLOSURE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HAMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bottle Cap or Closure, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to caps or closures for jars and bottles, intended particularly for containing mustard and the like.
' The principal object. of the invention is to provide a mustard cap or closure adapted to be used in connection with a jar or bottle having a plurality of separated screw threads.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mustard bottle or jar provided witlra. cap or closure constructed in accordance with the present invention, the cover plate of the'cap being adapted to slide in a horizontal plane; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the jar shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view, on a small scale, of the cap shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is an under plan view of the cap shown in Fig, 3; Fig. 5 is a vertical section through a mustard cap in which the cover plate is hinged so as to li it up.
Like. reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
l'leierring particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inelusive, the numeral 1 represents a jar or bottle which is formed adjacent its upper end with an annular rib 2 and a plurality of separated spiral threads 3 extending upward from the rib 2. The improved closure includes a. cap 4 and a. cover plate 5 which serves to close an opening 6 formed in the flat top 7 of the cap. In addition to the flat top 7 the cap is formed with a depending Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 8, 1912.
Patented May 12, 1914. Serial Iva-714,142;
as indicated at 10, so as to produce projec-- tions adapted to engage the separated spiral threads of the jar or bottle 1, whereby to permit the cap to be screwed downward onto the separated threads of the bottle. The flange 8 preferably is formed with a plurality of outstanding vertical corrugations 11. The cover plate 5 preferably is hinged at 14. to the flat top 7 of the cap, so as to swing in a horizontal plane around a vertical axis. The hinge joint 14 preferably is formed by punching or riveting a portion of the metal of the cover plate 5 downward through an opening in the top 7 of the cap. The means for swinging the cover plate 5 on its )ivot 14 preferably comprises a tongue 15 winch is formed integral with the cover plate 5, and extends first upward, as indicated at 15; then downward, as indicated at 16; then inward, as indicated at 17, and then outward, as shown at 18, to form a lip. The inwardly bent portion 17 is adapted, when the cover is in closed position, to engage under the lower edge of the flange 8, and prevent any supplemental upward twisting movement of the cover plate 5. For the purpose of locking the cover )late 5 in position, the top 7 of the cap is ulged slightly upward, as indicated at 20, so as to provide a knob which engages a socket member 21 in the cover plate 5, thereby preventing accidental turning movement of the cover plate after it has been closed,
The modified construction illustrated in Fig. 5 is the same as that shown in Fig. 2,
except that the cover plate 5 is pivoted at '14 so as to swing upward around a horizontal axis. In this modified construction, the tongue 15 is provided with the inwardly bent portion 17 intended to look below the lower edge of the flange.
What is claimed is:
A mustard jar or closure comprising a cap having a flange formed with a plurality of locking projections, said cap having an opening in the upper end thereof, a cover plate pivoted on said cap, said cover plate having a tongue formed by bending a portion of the metal upward, then downward,
Q mosses and then inward, and then outward, the inmy signature in the presence of two Witward portion of said tongue being adapted nesses. to fit underneath the lower edge 0i said cap adjacent one of said locking projections, I 'OLES HAMMER 5 substantially as described. Witnesses:
In testimony whereof that I claim the OLIVER E. DAvIs,
foregoing as my own, it have hereto afiixed U'l'remn M. HoonREITEn.
