SLEEVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1914.
Application filed November 4, 1912. Serial No. 729,210.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT W. SorrLoss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grosse Pointe Shores, in the county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleeves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the use of outer garments and more particularly those worn by drivers of vehicles, and by others in outdoor pursuits it is desirable that means he provided for preventing entrance of air to the sleeve ends and that any device for this purpose does not detract from the appearance of the garment when not in actual use.
This invention relates to sleeves for garments and to an arrangement thereof whereby the portion which forms a finish when not in use may be brought into such position that it effectually closes the sleeve around the wrist of the wearer.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a sleeve that embodies features of the invention showing a cuff in open position with one corner turned back to illustrate the fastening means; Fig. 2 is a view of the reverse side of the sleeve showing the other corner of the cuff in open position; Fig. 3 is a view showing the cuff extended and partially fastened, the margin of the sleeve being cut away to give clear view; Fig. 4 is a view of the reverse side that corresponds to Fig. 2 and shows the cuff in closed position; and Fig. 5 is a view in section taken on or about line V-V of Fig. 3.
As shown in the drawings, a sleeve 1 of suitable material and pattern has a cuff 2 whose upper marginal portion 3 is suitably stitched or otherwise attached permanently within the sleeve at an interval from the outer margin of the latterand preferably at the inner edge of the hem 4: thereof. The cuff is of smaller diameter than the sleeve and has one end margin 5 near which an inner button 6 and an outer button 7 are applied. The other margin 8 of the cuff is arranged to overlap the margin 5 and is provided with a buttonhole indicated at 9 to engage the button 6 and another one indicated at 10 to engage the button 7. Thus when the cuff is extended as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 it may be snugly drawn around the wrist of the wearer and buttoned in such manner as to eflectively close the sleeve. The cuff is also arranged to fall back when not in use and when so disposed the buttonhole 10 is arranged to engage a finishing button 11 such as is usually applied to a coat sleeve for ornament. The other corner of the cuff on which the button 7 is fastened has a hook 13 or like fastening means adapted to engage a complemental loop or eye 1& or the like. In applying the cufi to the inside of the sleeve the sleeve lining indicated at 15 may be stitched over the cuff which is preferably folded on itself to form an inner facing 16 so that the outside of the cuff when it is folded back will correspond to the body of the sleeve if desired. As a result of this construction a coat sleeve is obtained which presents a neat and attractive appearance when in ordinary use and which when the cuff is extended, is effectively closed around the wrist of the wearer and is therefore of special advantage for outdoor use and for driving or riding in the open.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement shown.
What I claim is The combination with a garment sleeve, of a revertible cuff of less diameter than said sleeve, said cuff having the inner end thereof secured in said sleeve between said sleeve and the lining thereof whereby the outer end of said cuff can be folded against the outer side of said sleeve, said and having separatable ends, a button carried by one end of said cuff, said cuff having the opposite end thereof provided with a buttonhole adapted to receive said button and retain said cuff in a closed extended position relatively to said sleeve, a button carried by the outer side of said sleeve and adapted to engage the cuff folded against the outer side of said button of said cuff, a hook carried by said cuif adjacentto the button thereof, and an eye carried by the outer side of said sleeve and adapted to receive said hook, said hook and eye being concealed by said cuff and 00- operating with the button of said sleeve and the buttonhole of said cuff in retaining said sleeve. 10
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
