To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. MAKE- PEACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Olmsted and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fence post, which is to be constructed partially of metal and partially of concrete, the primary object being to provide a metallic shell which is corrugated so as to be very strong and durable, and which is filled with a concrete core.
A further object is to provide means whereby the laterally extending wires may be readily attached to or detached from the structure.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fence post constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse, horizontal sectional View taken through the post.
Referring to the drawing, and in particular to Figs. 1,2 and 3, l designates a metallic shell which is in this instance out sufliciently long to be used as a fence post, and which is longitudinally corrugated so as to strengthen the post. A plurality of vertically alined and spaced slots 2 are provided in one of the outwardly bulged corrugations 3 of the shell, the outer face of the shell at the opposite side of each slot being serrated, as at at, for a purpose which will be described more fully hereinafter.
In completing the structureof the post, the shell 1 is placed in an upright position and a vertically extending bar or red is placed against the inner, concave face of the corrugation designated by the numeral 3 so that it extends past the slots 2. Then cement or some such material in its plastic state is poured into the shell to form a score 6 and is allowed to harden, a suitable base 7 being formed in any desired manner on the lower end of the post. After the cement has hardened, the rod is withdrawn, thus leaving a vertical opening 8 which communicates with the different slots 2, the flattened surface of the core forming the inner wall of the opening or passage-way 8 being disposed in the plane of the side edges of the said slots, After the post thus formed has been insert-ed in the ground and anchored by suitable means, fence wires 9 may be attached to the post by placing each of them against the serrated side edges of one of the slots 2 so that an attaching rod 5 may engage each of the wires upon being thrust downwardly into the opening 8, the adjacent surface of the core being in contact with the said wires so as to prevent the wires from becoming bent and thus maintain the same in proper engagement with the attaching rod. The wires 9 may be vertically adjusted so as to be extended or closed with respect to each other by shifting them to different sets of serrations after removing the rod 5, and by replacing the rod when they are so positioned.
What is claimed is A fence post comprising an elongated hollow shell having a plurality of longitudinally spaced slots cut therein to form wire seats having parallel side edges, a core for the said shell having a portion of its side face flattened so as to lie in the plane of the side edges of the shell slots, a longitudinal passage-way being formed between the said flattened surface of the coreand the adjacent portion of the shell in communication with the wire seats, and a locking rod adapted to be positioned within the said passageway for clamping the wires positioned within the said seats against the flattened face of said core.
