GRAIN-DOOR FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. KEMPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grain- Doors for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grain doors for railway cars.
One object of my invention is to provide a grain door with means for securely sealing the side and lower edge joints between the car door and the car body against leakage when the door is closed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a grain door which will be firmly held in the closed position but which may be easily and quickly released and moved to the open position.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention Figure l is a side elevation of a part of a grain car, which is provided with my improved grain door, the latter being shown in the closed position. A portion of the track is broken away to show the trolley wheels. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view, on the line (2-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section, on the line cd of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional View on the line eof Fig. 5. In this view the sealing members are shown in solid lines in the closed position, and in dotted lines in the open posi tion. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line g7z of Fig. 4.

extend. By means of this construction the door 4, is movable edgewise to and from the closed position, and is also capable of being swung outwardly at its lower end to release the grain so as to permit the door being moved easily to the open position. For the purpose of releasably holding the door from swinging outwardly at its lower end, an upwardly and downwardly swinging apron 10, is rigidly secured to a horizontal, longitudinal bar 11, which is pivotally mounted in barrels 12, formed on the outer edge of a horizontal plate 13, which is secured to the upper side of the sill of the doorway.
When the apron 10 is swung to the closed position shown in solid lines in the drawings, it will not only hold the door from swinging outwardly but it will serve to seal the joint between the lower edge of the door and the car body. To releasably lock the apron 10 in the closed position, the door 4 has pivoted to its outer side a plurality of locking catches 14, of bell crank form, one set of arms of which are adapted to be swung over the outer side of the apron 10,
and the other set of arms of which are pivot-' ally connected to a longitudinal bar 15, which is reciprocated by means of a pin 16, secured thereto, and extending through a slot 17, of a lever 18, which is pivoted at 19 to the door 4. A staple 20, is secured to the door and may have attached to it the upper end of the lever 18, by any of the usual sealing devices, not shown. By swinging the lever 18 away from the staple 20, the catches 14, will be swung to release the apron 10, so that the latter may be swung downwardly to permit the door 4, to swing outwardly.
To hold the door 4 against movement from the closed position, and also to seal the joints between the car body and the side edges of the door, the following mechanism is provided :As shown in Fig. 1, one set of flanges of two vertical angle irons 21, are secured to the outer side of the door 4, the other set of flanges of said angle irons being spaced apart respectively from the adjacent side edges of the door, thereby forming therewith two vertical grooves in which are adapted to respectively enter, when the door is in the closed position shown in Fig. 2, two vertical channel shaped sealing members 22, shown enlarged in Figs. 4 and 5. These two sealing members 22, are each pivoted to links 23, which are in turn pivoted respectively on horizontal bolts 24, which extend through one set of flanges of two vertical angle irons 25, the other set of flanges of which are se cured to the inner side of the jambs 3, as shown in Fig. 2. The bolts 24: also extend into the jambs 3. Pivoted to the channel sealing members 22, are two links 26, which are respectively pivoted to two crank arms 27, secured to the bar '11, as shown in Figs. 13 l and 4. 7
hen the apron 10 is swung downwardly from the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 4-, to the position shown in dotted lines in said figure, the bar 11 will be rocked, 15 thereby swinging the channel sealing members 22, upwardly and inwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, in which position the sealing members 22, will clear the door 4, thereby permitting it to be moved edgewise to the open position.
It will be noted that the angle, irons are spaced apart from the jambs 2-3, thereby forming two grooves in which the sealing members 22 are slidably movable. In the closed position the sealing members 22 overlap the adjacent side edges of the door 4:, and the angle irons 25, thereby sealing the joints between the side edges of the door and the angle irons Two smaller vertical channel bars 28, are respectively mounted in the channel sealing members 22, to which they are secured by pivot bolts 29, on which are pivoted the links 23.
The door 4, near its upper edge, is provided with an opening 30, which is adapted to be closed by a small door 31, connected by hinges 32, with the door 1-. Extending through the door 31, is a locking lever 33, having at its inner end an arm 34, which engages the inner side of the door 4, when the lever 33 is turned to the locked position. The outer end of the lever 33 is provided with a crank arm which is adapted to strike and be secured to a staple 35, when the lever.

In the operation of my invention the lever 18, is swung to the open position, thereby releasing the apron 10 from the catches 14L, whereupon the pressure of the grain against the inside of the door 4:, will force said door outwardly, thereby swinging the apron 10, downwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4r, at which time the members 22 will be swung upwardly and inwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4C, in which position they will be out of the path of movement of the door 4:, which may then be moved edgewise to the fully open position.
I do not limit my invention to the structure illustrated and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from 65 the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A car body having a track, supporting means running on said track, an edgewise movable door pivotally suspended from said supporting means so as to swing outwardly at its lower end, sealing means movable across the path of movement of said door at one side edge of said door, when the door is in the closed position, a sealing member for closing the joint between the lower edge of the door and the car body and in the closed position serving to hold the door from swinging outwardly when the door is in the closed position, connecting means between said sealing member and said sealing means whereby they are operated simultaneously, and releasable means for holding the sealing member in the closed position.
2. A car body having a doorway, an edgewise movable door for closing said doorway, a plurality of sealing means for sealing the joints respectively at opposite side edges and at the bottom edge of the door when the door is in the closed position, and connecting means between said sealing means whereby they are movable simultaneously to and from the closed position.
A car body having a doorway, an edgewise movable door for closing said doorway, a stop member, a sealing member for closing the joint between the car body and the lower edge of the door when the door is closed, and means for moving said stop member to a position across the pat-h of movement of said door, when said sealing member is moved to the closed position.
l. A car body having a doorway and provided with a longitudinal track, supporting means running on said track, a door pivotally suspended from said supporting means so as to be swung laterally outward at its lower end, a stop member movable across the path of movement of the door when the door is in the closed position, releasable means for holding the door from moving outwardly when in the closed position, connecting means between said stop member and said holding means, whereby the stop member and said holding means move simultaneously, and releasable means for locking said holding means in the closed position.
5. Av car body having a doorway, an edgewise movable door for closing said doorway, links pivoted to said car body, a stop member pivoted to said links and movable to and from a position in the path of movement of said door, an apron hinged to said car body and movable to and from a position in which it will close the joint between the lower edge of the door and the car body, and means connecting said stop member and said apron whereby, when the apron is swung to the closed position, the stop member will be'swung to a position across the path of movement of the door.
6, A car body having a doorway, an edgewise movable door for closing said doorway, two sealing members at opposite sides of said doorway movable across the path of movement of said door, an upwardly and downwardly swinging apron for closing the joint between the lower edge of the door and the car body when the door is closed, means connecting said apron and said'sealing members for simultaneously moving said sealing members when the apron is swung, and releasable means for locking the apron in the closed position.
7. A car body having a doorway and 'a longitudinal track, supporting means running on said track, a door pivotally supported from said supporting means so as to swing outwardly at its lower end, two sealing members at opposite sides of said doorway movable across the path of movement of said door, an upwardly and downwardly movable apron for closing the joint between the car body and the lower edge of the door when the door is closed, means connecting the apron and said sealing members, whereby the apron and the sealing members move simultaneously, and releasable means for and movable across the path of movement of said door, an apron hinged to the car body and movable to and from a position closing the joint between the car body and the lower edge of the door when the door is closed, connecting means between the apron and said sealing members whereby they may be simultaneously swung to the open and closed positions, and locking means whereby the apron is releasably held in the closed position.
