UNION SUIT.

specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, i314.
T0 all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD MORRIS, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Impro-vements in Union Suits; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to union suits and has for an object to provide a novel supplemental fastening tab for preventing opening of the garment at the crotch.
A further object of the invention is to provide a supplemental tab that extends longitudinally of the reinforcing strip at the opening in the underdrawers and is stitched at both ends whereby the lingers may be inserted underneath the tab to button and unbotton the button.
A further object of the invention is to provide a transverse buttonhole in the reinforcing strip, and a longitudinal buttonhole in the supplemental tab through bot-h of which the button is engaged, such disposition of the buttonholes at right angles to each other positively preventing unbuttoning of the garment.
`With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of an undergarment embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 2-2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3 3 Fig. 1. Fig. i is a detail perspective view showing the flap in position to permit of the fingers being passed in from the sides to button the button through the buttonhole in the reinforcing strip.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a union suit of ordinary character and including underdrawers 11, the latter having the usual opening 12 at the front, one side of the opening being equipped with the usual reinforcing strip 13 through which transverse buttonholes 15 are passed to receive the buttons 1G carried by the other side of the opening. It is well known that the lowest button 17 disposed at the crotch is prone to open at times, and to obviate this annoyance I provide the following attachment.k A relatively short tab 18 preferably formed of the same material as the garment is arranged longitudinally of the reinforcing strip 13 at the crotch and is stitched at the ends as shown at 19 whereby the fingers may be inserted underneath the tab from the sides. The tab is formed intermediate the ends with a longitudinal buttonhole 2O which receives the button 17 of the crotch, the buttonhole 20 being at right angles to the buttonhole 21 of the button 17. When the button is buttoned through the reinforcing strip and through the tab, it is evident that upon spreading apart of the legs of the drawers which movement would tend to open the tab buttonhole 20, the reinforcing strip buttonhole 21 will be extended longitudinally and therefore tightened upon the button, and conversely when the legs of the drawers are spread as in walking which movement would tend to open the reinforcing strip buttonhole 9,1, the tab buttonhole 20 will be tightly engaged upon the button, and thus accidental opening of the drawers at the crotch positively prevented. By virtue of the tab being secured only at the ends, the fingers may be inserted quickly and easily from the sides underneath the tab to unbutton the button from the tab and then maintained in this p0- sition to easily unbutton the button from the reinforcing strip. Also to button the garment at this point the fingers may be readily inserted underneath the tab to iirst button the button through the reinforcing strip and then button it through the tab.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple and inexpensive attachment for underga-rments which will be light and comfortable to the wearer andv will positively prevent opening of the garment at the crotch.
IVhat is claimed, is
The combination with a union suit having an opening in the front with a longitudinal reinforcing strip on one side of said opening provided with transverse buttonholes receiving the buttons carried by the other side of said opening, of a short tab extending longitudinally of and secured at the ends to said reinforcing strip at the underdiawei's crotch, said tab being entirely free at the sides from said underdlzm'ers, and being provided with a longitudinal buttonhole dis- 5 posed at :L right angle to the crotch buttonhole of the underdia-Wel's and adapted to receive the button of said Crotch buttonhoie.
In testimony whereof, I ai'ix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDIVARD MORRIS, JP..
