Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1914.
Application iled November 12, 1913. Serial No. 800,689.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATARINA BLUMEL, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rlhis invention relates to handles, and more particularly to a handle that can be advantageously used in connection with chatelaine bags, bundle carriers and receptacles having ropes or cords by which they are carried.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive handle that can be easily and quickly adjusted and clamped upon the cords of a chatelaine bag or other carrier, whereby the bag or carrier can be easily carried without any danger of the cords cutting the hand.
I attain the above and other objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein z- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the handle, Fig. Q is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the handle.
A handle in accordance with this invention comprises a curved bar 1 that tapers from a point intermediate the ends thereof to the extreme ends of the handle. The handle bar l has a longitudinal opening 2 extending from one end thereof to the opposite end. This opening receives the cords or draw strings 3 of a bag or receptacle t. The top of the handle bar, intermediate the end thereof, has a slot 5 in communication with the opening 2. ,The end walls of the slot 5 are provided with recesses 6 for the ends of a fiat spring 7.
Pivotally mounted in the slot 5, above the spring 7 by a transverse pin 8 is an eccentric member 9 having a handle or lever l0. Nhen the handle or lever 10 is in a lowered position in engagement with the bar l, said member engages the spring 7 and holds said spring in engagement with the draw strings 3, whereby said strings will be frictionally held within the handle bar and said handle bar prevented from slipping upon the strings.
By reference to Fig. l it will be observed that the bag 4 can be closed by the draw strings 3 and then said strings held taut by the handle bar l.
lVliat I claim is 1. The combination with a bag having draw strings, of a handle provided with an opening to receive said strings, a flat spring arranged in said handle for frictionally engaging said-strings, and means arranged in said handle for engaging said spring and holding the same in engagement with said strings.
2. A handle comprising a curved bar having a longitudinal opening adapted to receive strings, a flat spring loosely mounted in said handle and adapted to extend into said opening, and a pivoted eccentric member arranged in said handle for engaging said spring.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
KATARINA BLUMEL.
