To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. YORK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mena, in the county of Polk and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of .which the following is a specifica-tion.

An object of the invention is to provide a lamp burner for rigidly holding the lamp chimney and preventing the same from falling to the floor and breaking when the lamp is tilted.

The invention embodies, among other features, the provision of a lamp cap which can be cheaply and easily manufactured and which includes a means for gripping the lamp chimney on the inner face thereof.

In a large number of lamp burners now in use the means for holding the chimney on the burner grip the chimney on the exterior thereof, but it is well known that constructions of this kind cannot securely hold the chimney on the burner and that the chimney ofttimes slips ofl" of the burner and is broken due to the inadequate gripping action of the members employed to grip the chimney on its periphery.

In my device I employ a burner in which the members employed for supporting the chimney grip the same on its inner face. and conform substantially to the curvature of the chimney so that the chimney will be prevented from accidental displacement, while at the same time the glass from which the chimney is formed can contract and eX- pand due to the action of the heat or cold without causing any breaking of the chimney.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my lamp burner, showing the chimney applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an inverted horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, showing the manner of applying the gripping means for the chimney tothe gallery of the burner; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the views,

" disclose, a lamp burner 10 consisting of a r supporting member 11 including a seriesof radially extending bars 12 provided with integral ears 13 and which are adapted to extend through apertures 14- formed in a gallery 15 so that when the ears 13 are bent upon the gallery the wick supporting member 11 will readily support the gallery as shown, with a portion of the wick supporting member projecting through the gallery in order that the usual wire between the gripping members lying inV an annular recess 21 formed by bending the edge of the gallery 15 downwardly to form a flange- 22 which will inclose the portions of the wire between the gripping members 18, the said gripping members being adapted to project through apertures 23 formed in the gallery 15 adjacent to the apertures 14 through which the ears 13 project.

As shown in Fig. 1, when the lamp chimney 19 is applied to the lamp burner 10, the gripping members 18 will engage the inner face of the lamp chimney and substantially conform to the curvature thereof, the said gripping members at their free ends, for this reason, being curved and adapted to spread outwardly, thus securely gripping the chimney and holding the same in supporting position upon the lamp burner.

It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the lamp burner described can be cheaply manufactured and will efficiently accomplish the purpose for which it is desired and it should be particularly noted that the gripping members 18 formed of a single piece of material doubled upon itself to form gripping members having intermediate portions secured to the gallery, provides a rigid structure in which the various parts will not easily become disengaged.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a lamp burner, the combination with a wick supporting member, of a series of radially extending. bars formed with the wick supporting member, a gallery provided with openings, ears on the said Wiel: supporting member and adapted for connection with the gallery to secure the Wick supporting meinber and gallery together, With the openings in the gallery lying immediately above the ends oi' the bars of the said Wick supporting member, and chimney gripping members for gripping a chimney supported on the gallery, the said chimney gripping' members being formed of a single piece of spring-like material having portions between the gripping members secured to the under side of the gallery by bending the peripheral edge of the gallery downwardly around said portions, the said gripping members being formed to project upwardly through the openings in the gallery and having the ends of the bars of the Wick supporting member abutting against the under sides so that portions o the chimney gripping members Will lie between the galleryY and the said Wick supporting member and be rigidly held in position thereby, to grip the chimney.
