UNITED AARON SINGER AND MORRIS ME SNICOFF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.; SAID SINGER ASSIGNOR TO SAID MESNICOFF. v
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationfiled October 21, 1913. SerialNo. 796,385.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AARON SINGER and Monroe MEsNIooFr, both citizens of the United States. and residents of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Menthol l'nhalers and Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for inhaling menthol and for rubbing menthol over the skin, such application of menthol being generally deemed efficacious in the mitigation and cure of catarrhal infections of the nose and throat, and also for head aches, neuralgia, and other similar troubles.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, economical, efficient, and improved device for these purposes.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the menthol inhaler and pencil, taken through its longitudinal axis. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inhaler, showing its cap removed whereby it is converted into a menthol pencil. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
A hollow cylindrical holder 1, preferably made of sheet aluminium, is closed at one end 2, and within its opposite end 3 is secured a disk-shaped block 4, preferably of wood, held thereto by means of circular burs 5 formed in the metal. Said block has a central projection 6 upon which is cast a cake of menthol 7, whereby the menthol is firmly held to the block 4 and to the holder. A cap 8, having a central opening 9 at the top thereof and adaptable to fit over the extremity of the holder 1, is placed over the menthol cake 7. The cap is cylindricaland at its top semi-spherical, and the menthol is cast in the same general configuration but sufficiently narrow to leave a completely surrounding space 10 between its surface and the inner surface of the cap. A bead 11 formed on the holder 1 limits the movement of the cap 8 thereover.
The holder 1 is provided with oppositely disposed openings 12 leading to the cavity 13 within the holder adjacent the block 4. and similar openings let are provided in the cap 8 and are adaptable to .register with the openings 12. Passageways 15 extending through the block 4: lead from thecavitv 13 into the space 10.
When the menthol is inhaled, by bringing the opening 9 of the cap 8 close to the nose of the user, the air, in being drawn in, passes through the openings 12, 1 1 into the cavity 13 and then through the passageways 15 into the space 10 and then out through the opening 9, whereby an ample quantity ofstrongly laden mentholatcd air 18 supplied to the user.
lVhen the menthol is notin use, the cap may be disposed to throw its openings 14 out of registry with the openings 12, as shown in Fig. 3, to avoid the air circulating through the space 10 and around the menthol. Upon removal of the cap 8, by simply slipping it off, the inhaler is converted into a menthol-pencil, as shown in Fig. 2, which may be then used for rubbing or massaging the skin with the menthol cake 7.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described our invention we claim 1. The combination of a hollow holder, a block fixed at the extremity thereof holding a cake of menthol, a removable cap over said menthol having an opening at its top and a space between its interior surface and the surface of the menthol, said holder having an opening leading to its hollow interior, said block having a passageway leading from the hollow interior of the holder to said space, and said cap having a perforation and being adaptable to register the perforation with said opening of the holder and to close said opening.
2. The combination of a hollow holder having a cake of menthol fixed thereto, a removable cap over said menthol having an opening for inhalation and a space between its interior surface and the surface of the menthol, said holder having an opening leading to its hollow interior, said holder having a passageway leading from the hollow interior of the holder to said space, and said cap having a perforationv and being adaptable to register the perforation with said opening of the holder and to close the opening, said perforation and opening when Patented May 5, 1914:.
registering conducting the air into said hollow interior, through said passageway, and into said space.
3. The combination of a holder having a cake of menthol fixed thereto, the lLOlilQI having a cavity therewithin, a removable cap over said menthol having an opening for inhalation and a space between its interior surface and the surface of the menthol, said holder having an opening lead ing to said cavity, said holder having a passageway leading from said cavity to said space, and said cap having a perforation and being adaptable to register the perforation with said opening of the holder and to close the opening, said perforation and opening when registering conducting the air into said cavity, through said passageway, and into said space.
at. The combination of a holder, a block fixed to said holder at the end thereof, a cake of menthol fixed to said block, the holder having a cavity therewithin adjacent said block, a removable cap over said menthol having an opening for inhalation and a space between its interior surface and the surface of the menthol, said holder having an opening leading to said cavity, said block having a passageway leading from said cavit to said space, and said cap having a pertoration registering with the opening of said holder and being adaptable to close said opening, said perforation and opening when registering conducting the air into said cavity, through said passageway, and into said space.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 16th day of October, A. D. 1913.
