To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HJALMAR LINDESTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Irons, of
which the following is a specification.
I This invent-ion relates to improvements in that class of irons used by tailors and large tailoring establishments for pressing garments, the seams thereof, and cloth, and has particular relation to that type of such irons which are commonly known as blower irons and are internally heated by a mixture of air and gas supplied thereto under pressure; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In the above mentioned type of irons the body of the iron is usually considerably elongated, and when fuel is supplied to the cavity of the iron, which is usually done at about its middle, it has been found diflicult to heat the ends f the bottom of the iron uniformly wit-h its middle portion on account of the inability to force the fuel or mixture of air and gas and flames to the ends of the cavity.
The main object of my present invention is to provide an iron which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable and eflicient in operation, and equipped with a burner of such construction that the fuel or mixture of air and gas will be supplied to and discharged within the cavity of the iron in such a manner as to cause complete combustion thereof and uniform distribution of the heat, to the end that the iron will be evenly and quickly heated.
Another object of the invention is to provide an iron ofsuch construction that the burner therefor and the fuel supply pipe leading to said burner may be adjustably and detachably connected to the iron in such a manner as to be out of the way of the operator, and so that they can be readily removed for cleaning and repairs, and also when desired so that the fuel supply pipe may be located in alinement or substantial alinement with the handle of the iron and extended from either the front or rear portion thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation,
In the accompanying drawing, which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 11 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the iron; Fig.3 is a rear end view of a portion thereof; Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of the burner, showing a modification in its con-. struction, and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the difiere'nt views of the drawing.
The reference numeral 7 designates the body of the iron, which is hollowand is provided with a horizontally disposed partition 8, located a slight distance above the upper surface of the base 9 of said body. The partition 8 is provided at about its middle with an opening 10, and directly above the 2 same the top of the iron is provided with an opening 11, which openings are for the reception of th burner 12, which is cylindrical in shape, and is provided at its upper end with an annular flange 13, to rest on the upper surface of the top of the body 7 around the opening 11 therein, through which opening the burner is extended, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The burner 12 is provided with a bore 15, which extends through its upper end and to near its lower end, and is intersected at its low-er end by, or communicates with a transverse bore or opening 16, which, when the burner is in its operative position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, will lie horizontally and longitudinally with respect to the body 7, between the partition 8 and base 9, so that the fuel or mixture of air and gas will be discharged through the transverse opening 16, toward the ends of the iron as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Connected to the upper portion of the burner 12, is a section 17, of a fuel supply pipe, which may be connected at its other end by means of a flexible tube to a supply of fuel, such as a mixture of gas and air, which supply is not shown, and which may be under pressure. The section or pip-e is of curved form; that is, its lower portion is extended downwardly through an opening 18, in the central portion of the handle plate 19, and then extended substantially horizontally, and then upwardly at its outer or free portion. The handle plate 19 is provided with a handle 20, which is provided on one of its surfaces at each of its ends with a recess 21, to receive the horizontal portion of the fuel supply pipe 17, so that the latter may be brought and maintained in substantial alinement with the handle 20, and at either end thereof.
The top of the body 7 is provided with a number of bosses 22, which are of about the same thickness as the flange 13 of the burner 12, and to which bosses the handle plate 19 is secured by means of screws 23. By this arrangement, it is apparent that the burner 12, after it shall have been placed in the openings 10 and 11 of the partition 8 and top re spectively of the iron body, can be adjusted so that its transverse opening 16, will lie longitudinally with respect to the iron body, and that said burner will be held in such position by means of the handle plate 1.9, which, as before stated, may be secured to the top of the iron body by means of screws.
As some operators prefer to have the fuel supplied to the iron from the front thereof, as indicated by full lines in Fig. 1, while others prefer to have it supplied from the year, as indicated by dotted lines in said figure, it is evident that by loosening the screws 23, so as to relieve the burner 12, of pressure by the handle plate 19, the burner and fuel supply pipe 17 can be turned from the position shown by continuous lines in Fig. 1, to that illustrated by dotted lines in said figure, or vice versa. Should it be desired to have the fuel supplied from the side of the iron, it is manifest that the fuel supply pipe can be adjusted with. respect to the burner so that said pipe will extend laterally with respect to the handle and iron body.
In Figs. 4; and 5 of the drawing, I have shown a modification in the construction of the burner, which consists in providing its lower portion with a partition 24L, which is located transversely with respect to the transverse opening 16, and directly below the lower end of the bore 15, of the burner. By using the partition 24:, it is evident that the mixture of air and gas will be divided thereby, and thus cause it to be discharged through the ends of the opening 16, in about equal proportions. The rear end of the iron body 7 is formed with an opening 26, which preferably extends from the upper surface of the base 9, to the lower surface of the top of the iron, and may be closed by means of a door 27, hinged at its lower portion to the iron body. This door may be held in its closed position by means of a latch 28, pivoted at its upper end to the rear end of the upper portion of the iron, and is somewhat smaller than the opening 26, so as to permit of the escape of gases.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawing, it will be readily understood and clearly seen, that by admitting fuel through the supply pipe 17, to the burner 12, it will be discharged from the lower end of the bore 15, into the bore or opening 16, and out through the ends thereof toward the ends of the iron, where it may be ignited and will be consumed in such a manner as to heat the end portions of the iron body, as well as its bottom, in an even and uniform manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An iron consisting of a hollow body having an opening in its top, a handled plate secured to the top of the body at a distance therefrom and having an opening above the opening in said body, a single piece burner located in the opening of the body and having an annular flange on its upper portion to rest on the top of the body and below said plate, said burner having a longitudinally extended bore therein and provided with a transverse bore intersecting the first named bore, a fuel supply pipe con nected to the upper portion of the burner and extended through the opening in said plate and projected laterally.
2. An iron consisting of a hollow body having an opening in its top, a handled plat-e secured to the top of the body at a distance therefrom and having an opening above the opening in said body, a single piece burner located in the opening of the body and having an annular flange on its upper portion to rest on the top of the body and below said plate, said burner having a. longitudi nally extended bore therein and provided with a transverse bore intersecting the first named bore, a fuel supply pipe connected to the upper portion of the burner and extended through the opening in said plate and projected laterally, the handle of said plate having on one of its surfaces at each of its ends a recess to receive the fuel supply pipe.
3. An iron consisting of a hollow body having an opening in its top, a handled plate secured to the top of the body at a distance therefrom and having an opening above the opening in said body, a single piece burner ally, the handle of said plate having on one of its surfaces at one of its ends a recess to receive the fuel supply pipe.
