Description

ADOLF VOIGT, OF GIESSEN, GERMANY.
EXPLOSIVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1914.
No Drawing. Application filed March 29, 1911, Serial No. 617,714. Renewed March 21, 1914. Serial No.
b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Anotr VoIo'r, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Giessen, Germany, have invented a new and useful Explosive and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
While picric acid, as well as the salts of the same, and the corresponding cresol derivatives have frequently been used for explosive purposes, such use has, in recent years, shown a. considerable decrease, owing to the high and increasing cost of the material, as compared with other explosives, and to the fact that the mentioned salts are highly sensitive to shock and to friction.
I have ascertained by experiments, that the mononitro and ,binitro derivatives of phenol, as well as of cresol, or the salts of the 'sulfo acids of the same, are not subject to the disadvantages mentioned, and have suc ceeded in' producing explosives containing said ingredients intimately mixed with others. Ihave also ascertained that While the lower nitration products do .not, alone,
constitute explosives, yet that the addition thereto of oxygen carriers converts them into easily ignitible and extremely effective explosives. A combination for instance, of
25% sodium mononitro-phenolate and 75% sodium nitrate produces a mixture which is easily detonated. and possesses the blasting force of black powder, and it is possible to treble the explosive force by the addition of potassium perchlorate. These mixtures, furthermore," are highly insensitive to blow and friction and do not ignite fire damp. The
or sodium nitro cresol sulfonate. 65% sodium or potassium nitrate. 10% potassium perchlorate or chlorate. (2) 25% sodium mononitrophenolate, or sodium nitro cresol s'ulfonate. sodium or potassium nitrate. 25% I potassium perchlorate or chlorate. (3) 22.5% sodium mononit'rophen- .olate, or sodium nitro cresol sulfonate.
l5% sodium or potassium nitrate; 22.5% potassium perchlorate or chlorate. 10% ammonium nitrate. (4)2570 sodium monomtrophenolate, or sodium nitro cresol sulfo nate. .65% sodium of potassium nitrate. 10% trinitrotoluol. -The mixtures which are detonated either by means of a fuse alone or by means of a detonator, can be varied according to the purposes for which they are to be used.
What I claim is:
'AIh explosive compound 'comprising an intimate mixture. ofsodium nitro-cresol sulfonate, sodium nitrate and potassium per-- chlorate. v p y In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLF VQIGT.
