To all 'w71 omy it may concern:
Be it known that I, J .mms VERNON CA11- 'rER, a. citizen of the United States, residing` at Elliott, in the count-y ofLee and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and `useful Improvements in Distributers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing.
My invent-ion relates to distributers for fertilizer and the like, and has for its objects a machine easy to manufacture; with a large hopper having its weight over the draft wheel, and a. positive feed device and lump breaker; and means whereby it is possible t-o use the machine for delivery to the side of the cent-ral line of travel, if desired.
There are other objects and advantages hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view of the right hand side of the distributer, looking at same from a point behind. Fig. 2, the left hand, or driving side; Fig. a view lookingl down into the hopper. Fig. l is a plan view of the feed wheel and lump breaker. Fig. 5 shows the adjustable outlet in plan view. Fig. 6 shows the adjustable outlet in side elevation.
Like figures of reference denote the same parts wherever they are shown.
1 denotes a hopper of any suitable construction supported on a frame 2, to which are secured the forwardly projecting supports 3 and 4 for the cle-vis 5 by which the distributer is drawn along. The draft wheel 6 is suitably supported in bearings 7 and 8. The hopper extends above the wheel (3 for the purpose of carrying a surplus supply of fertilizer, and to distribute the weight, which prevents the draft wheel slipping. The bottom portion 9 of the hop per slopes downward toward the outlet which is positioned below the feed wheel 10.
Journaled in bea-rings 12, suitably mount ed on either side of the hopper 1, and extending across the hopper immediately above the outlet thereof, is a shaft 11 which has firmly iixed thereon the aforesaid feedwheel 10. One end of said shaft 11 extends outwardly beyond its bearing 12 and has se curely mounted thereon a sprocket wheel 13. Sprocket 13 is adapt-ed to be driven by a sprocket 15, mounted on the axle of draft wheel 6, through the medium of a chain 14 which passes over said sprocket wheels in Specification of Letters Patent.

the usual manner. Feed wheel 10 carries two bent members 33 and 3l which revolve with it and crush any lumps that may be in the fertilizer.
18, 19, and 2O are plow point-s removably fixed to standards which are detachably secured to the frame 2 of the machine. Normally these may be fixed at an angle to the path of travel of the machine, as shown in Fig. 1 so that in operation 18 will open the furrow, spout 21 will deliver the fertilizer to the open furrow, and 19 and 2O will cover the furrow.
If a center delivery machine is desired` the angularly disposed spout 21, which is detachably fastened below the discharge port of the hopper, is removed, and the standard'of plow share 18 is disconnected from the point indicated at 23, Fig. 1, and co-nnected at the point indicated by 2l. thus giving the arrangement'shown in Fig. 2. By this arrangement the fertilizer is delivered in front of the plow 19 which, in cutting its furrow, throws up the soil and fertilizer and to some extent covers the latter, and plows 18 and 20 being positioned rearwardly and to either side of plow 19, complete the covering of the fertilizer with the soil. To guide the machine, handles 25 and 2G are attached in any suitable manner.
The adjustable outlet consists of a metal pla-te 27 forming the bottom portion of the hopper behind wheel G. This plate has a slot 28 the area of which is varied b-y the slide 29. A handle 30 projects rearwardly from 29, and is provided with a number of holes and a pin 371, which strikes against piece 32 thereby limiting the opening of the slide. The upturned end 38' of the slide is provided for preventingside motion and prevents fertilizer from packing between the feed wheel and outlet. The stop pin 32 enables the slide 29 to be closed at will, and opened to exactly the same capacity without looking for any marks, notches or other indications. l
The feed wheel shown as a whole at 10, Figs. 3 and 4l, is composed of the lump breaking members 33 and 3l which are simply round iron rods flattened for a portion of their length, threaded and screwed into the hub flange 35. site directions. Such construction is not only cheap, but is superior to a cast Wheel all one piece, as it is not so easily broken.
I claiml. In a distributer, a hopper and a feed wheel in said hopper comprising a hub care rying radial spokes flattened for a portion of their length and bent laterally in alternately opposite directions,
