Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1914.
Application fi1ed December 4, 1913. Serial No. 804,752.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE HENNESSEE, a citizen of the United States, residing atAtlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guano-Distributers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of th1s specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in guano distributers, grain drills and the like and it has for its object, among others, the provision of a delivery spout so connected with the machine as to adapt it to deliver the material contained in the hopper either in advance or at the rear of the plow or at one side thereof, provision being had in connection with the hopper for scattering or distributing uni formly the material if desired.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a guano distributer in which provision is had whereby the machine may be moved backward without operating the hopper or looking the wheel to prevent the same from being backed,
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a guano distributer provided with my improved form of hopper. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. '3 is a vertical section through the adjusting spout.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 designates the beam, 2, 2 the handles, 3 the hopper, at the plow or furrow opener, 5 the driving wheel and coverer, all of which parts are of ordinary construction and, as they form no part of the present invention but are shown merely to illustrate the application of my adjustable hopper, description of these parts will not be undertaken.
6 is a delivery spout designed to be connected with the outlet 7 of the hopper 3, the connection therewith consisting of a peripheral flange 8 extending around the lower free end of the tubular outlet 7 which is enout of action when the machine is drawn backward consists of a tappet arm 9, the upper portion of which is slotted as at 16 to receive a pivot 11, thus aifording a sliding pivotal connection between the tappet arm and a link 15 which is pivoted to the plate 12, and 1 designates a spring fastened at one end to the upper end of the tappet arm 9 and its other end to the plate 12 which is fastened to the handle 2. The extreme lower end of the said tappet arm is provided with a lateral extension 17 which is normally in the path of the lugs 11 upon the outer face of the drive wheel 5. The said tappet arm'is adapted, -by-means of a wire or rod 18 having a loop 19, to be raised upward, thus throwing the lug carried by the lower end of the tappet arm out of engagement with. the lugs 11.
20 is a bar or rod, one end of which is pivotally connected with the tappet arm 9 at a point above the periphery of the drive wheel, the opposite end of the said bar having pivotal sliding connection with the hopper adapted to impart a partial rotary movement to the same in one direction, while a-spring 12*, mounted upon the beam 1, is connected to one end ofthe arm 2 fixed to the hopper and serves to return the latter to its normal position, thus giving the hopper an oscillatory movement.
From the foregoing description, it will be noted that, by the construction shown and described, provision is had whereby, by means of the loop 19, the tappet arm may be moved upward asuflicient distance to clear the lug carried at its lower end from engagement with the lugs upon the gear face of the drive wheel so that, in moving the machine backward, the mechanism controlling the fiow from the hopper, will be suspended without locking the drive wheel against rotation.
It will at once be noted that the delivery spout may be rotated sons to cause the same to deliver material fromthehopper either in advance or in the rear of the plow or, if desired, at the side of the machine, the spout being locked in either of its adjusted positions by means of the engagement of the hooked free end of the lever 13 with one of the openings 14: which are provided at intervals around the periphery of the upper end of the spout, the rear end of the said hooked lever 13 being connected to the bottom of the hopper 3. 1
From the foregoing description, the operation of the invention will be readily understood. When it is desired to deliver material from the hopper in advance of a plow, it is simply necessary to disengage a hook 18 from the opening 14: and turn the Spout into such position as'to cause the material passing through it to be delivered in advance of the Wheel as is shown in the drawings. When thus adjusted, the spout is locked in its adjusted position by engagement of the hooked lever 13 with the opening 14 which is the position to secure its adj ustment.
It will be understood that the spout may be locked in any other desired position wit-h reference to the hopper by turning to the proper position and locking it by means of engagement of the hook carried at the end of the lever 13 with the proper opening14e. As the apparatus is driven forward, the extensions 17 will be struck by the lugs 11, causing the tappet arm to swing on its pivot and impart a partial rotary movement to the hopper and, after the extensions 17 pass by the lug 11 the spring 1*, which is connected through the medium of the bar 2* of the hopper, will cause the latter to quickly return to its normal posi tion, thus giving a shaking or vibrating action to the hopper to cause the guano to be thrown out.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A guano distributor comprising a beam, a hopper mounted thereon, a driving wheel, lugs projecting from the face thereof, a longitudinally movable tappet arm having sliding connection, a lateral extension normally in the paths of said lugs, a bar pivotally connecting said tappet arm and hopper to cause partial rotary movement to be imparted to the hopper as the tappet arm is moved by a lug upon the driving wheel, and means for returning the hopper to its normal position after having been rocked by said bar, and a spout swiveled to said hopper, as set forth.
2. A guano distributor comprising a beam, a hopper mounted thereon, handles connected to said beam, a driving wheel having lugs projecting from the face thereof, a longitudinally movable tappet arm, a lateral extension at one end in the path of said lugs and a spring connecting the upper end with said handles, a bar pivoted at one end to the tappet arm and its other end having sliding pivotal connection with the hopper, a spring-pressed bar connected to the hopper, said hopper having a tubular outlet, a flange at its lower end, a, spout with a flange interlocking with the flange upon the tubular outlet and forming a swivel connection, and a hook carried by the hopper and adapted to engage an aperture in the spout, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
