Be it known that we, IVILLIAM IV. Ma- LONE and EDWARD V. MALONE, citizens of the United States, residing at Piqua, in the county of Miami, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to music leaf turners and has for an object to provide a de vice of this character having novel means for shifting the sheet holding clamps from one position to another to turn the sheet.
A further object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple mechanism including manually operatable racks and a train of gearing connected to said racks and having a crank connection with the sheet clamp, whereby upon one of said racks being shoved inwardly the clamp will be turned in one direction, and upon the other of said racks being shoved inwardly the clamp will be turned in the opposite direction.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character that will be extremely simple in construction, may be manufactured at a minimum expense and will employ a few parts that will not easily get out of order.
lVith the above objects in View the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.

Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on the line 2-2 Fig. 1 showing the clamp turning means in plan. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the sheet clamps. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the sheet clamp showing the manner of securing the parts together. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one member of the clamp. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view showing the upright portion of the other member of the clamp. Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a back board, and 11 designates a casing secured to the back board at the bottom for housing the clamp operating mechanism. In the present Cl1lbodiment of the invention, three clamps 12 are shown, all of the clamps being mounted on a common spindle 13 for rotation through an arc of 180 degrees as usual.
Secured to the back board and projecting forwardly therefrom are plates 11 which are connected by horizontal plates 15 corresponding in number to the number of sheet clamps, and through these horizontal plates are fixedly extended parallel stand shafts 16, 17 and 18. Secured to these stand shafts on the top face of each of the plates 14 is the operating mechanism for the re spective clamp 12, and since these mechanisms are all identical but one will be described.
Idler gears 19 and 20 are disposed on the outer shafts 16 and 18, and an idler pinion 21 is disposed on the intern'iediate shaft 17 and meshes with both gears. Parallel racks 22 and 23 mesh respectively with the outer sides of the gears 19 and 20. Upon either rack being actuated the train of gears and the opposite rack is also actuated. the racks working in opposite directions. The racks are equipped with corresponding operating stems 24.- and 25 which extend through the front of the casing 11 and are terminally equipped with respective buttons 26 and 27.
Each idler pinion 21 is equipped with an integral crank arm 28 that is longitudinally slotted. as shown at 29 to receive a downwardly extending pin 30 carried by a crank arm 31 secured to the corresponding sheet clamp 12. Upon actuation of either corresponding rack, the pinion will carry its crank arm 28 through an arc of 180 degrees or approximately so, with a resultant carrying of the related clamp crank arm 28 through a corresponding arc whereby the related clamp is turned also through a corresponding arc with a resultant turning of the sheet of music carried by the clamp.
The sheet clamps are identical in construction and each comprises an upright metal strip 32 provided with a horizontally extending strip 33 that has the lower edge bent outwardly to form a ledge 3-1- for supporting the sheet of music. The upright strip is provided. on the edge with hinge eyes and 36 for engagement with the spindle 13. Soldered or otherwise secured to the front face of the upright strip below the horizontal strip is a lip 37 between which and the upright strip there is formed a pocket. It removable clamp strip 38 is arranged to extend upon the front face of the upright strip and is provided with a reduced lower end 3 to enter this pocket. The upper end of the clamp strip is formed with a downwardly opening hook 40 which fits in a recess -jtl formed in the upper end of the upl'l llll strip. There is a horizontally extending linger 41:2 projecting from the edge of the clamp strip to engage along the sheet of music and hold the latter against buckling.
Assen'ibled with the horizontal strip is a spring clamp including a grip 4% formed integral with the lower edge of the strip and carrying hinge ears 4:4 between which are pivoted hinge cars 45 of a grip 46 that carries a transverse clamping head 47 which is positioned to extend along the horizontal strip, there being a helical spring 4 3 positioned on the pivot pin 49 that connects the grips, sueh spring serving to normally hold the clamp closed.
In operation the sheets of music are placed in the corresponding clamps as follows: The clamp strip off the clamp is first removed and the sheet of music placed upon the ledge of the horizontal strip and the spring clamp closed. The clamp strip is now inserted downwardly into its pocket with its hook entering the recess in the upright strip whereupon the clamp strip is anchored to the upright strip and confines the inner edge of the sheet against the upright strip.
Suppose that all of the sheet clamps are in their normal position, that is, turned to their limit ot movement to the right. In this position of the parts the racks 23 are disposed outwardly and the racks 22 in wardly. Each sheet is turned when necessary by pushing inwardly the correspond ing rack 28. When all of the sheets have been turned, they may be returned to normal position by pushing inwardly the racks 22 which have been moved outwardly by the initial turning of the sheets From the above description it will be seen that we have provided an extremely simple device of the class described which will be effective in operation, and which will be formed of a few parts that will not easily get out of order.
What is claimed, is:
l. A music leaf turner comprising a sheet clamp mounted to turn upon a vertical pivot, a train of gearing, a crank arm operated by said train of gearing, said crank arm having a longitudinal slot, a crank arm carried by said clamp engaging in said slot, and parallel reciprocatory racks movable in opposite directions and engaging said train of gearing for actuating the same to move said crank arms with a resultant rotation of said sheet clamp on its pivot.
2. A music leaf turner comprising a sheet clamp mounted. to turn upon a vertical pivot, a train of gearing, a crank arm operated by said train of gearing, horizon tally disposed outer gears and an intermediate pinion meshing with said outer gears, a crank arm integral with said pinion and having a longitudinal. slot, a crank arm carried by said clamp and engaging in said slot, and parallel reciprocatory racks movable in opposite directions and engaging the outer sides of said outer gears for actuating the same to move said crank arms with a re sultant rotation of said sheet clamp on its pivot.
