Be it known that L CLIFFORD BARGAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a cert: '11 new and useful Automatic Gas Valve, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to automatic gas controlling valves and has particular application to a valve for use in conjunction with the burners ot' stoves.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a valve of the above mentioned character wherein the valve controlling element will project above the plane of the burner so that said element will be depressed by the weight of the article placed upon the burner so as to open the valve, the valve being automatically closed when the article removed incident to the controlling element being relieved of the influence of the article a pilot light being employed whereby when the valve is opened as above described the large volume of gas flowing to the burner will be ignited.
In carrying out my invention it is my aim to provide a valve of the above mentioned character wherein the automatically controlled valve is arranged within the ordinary turn plug of the well-known form of valve used on stoves the parts being so constructed and arranged that the said valve will be rotated on rotation of the turn plug, so that when the latter is turned off, the said valve will operate to permit the controlling element to drop below the plane of the burner whereby articles may be inoved about the stove.
\Vith these and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention resides in the combination, construction, and specific arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be more fully described.
In the drawing i'orminga part of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference indicate similar parts; Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of a gas stove showing the valve partly in section applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the valve being closed and showing the controlling element arranged in its lowered position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the turn plug and its casing, showing the operating element partly broken away. Fig. is a top plan view oi the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates the valve casing of the ordinary well-known form of valveused on gas stoves, and is provided with an exterior screw threaded inlet and outlet 2- and 3 respectively. The upper end of the valve casing is cut away to form a stop -lto limit the movement of the turn plug arranged within the said valve casing and which is provided with a pin 6 adapted to engage said stop.
The turn plug 5 projects below the bottom of the casing and has its centrally disposed enlarged bore 7 which communicates with a reduced bore 8, said enlarged and reduced bores at the juncture thereof forming a valve seat 9 for the automatically controlled valve which will be hereinafter described. The turn plug 5 has an interiorly and eX- teriorly screw threaded lower portion, and threadedly secured within said plug is a ring 11 having an inwardly extending flange 12 forming a stop for the said automatically controlled valve.
Arranged within the turn plug 5 and capable of sliding movement therein is the 'alve stem 13 having an enlarged intermediate portion 13 disposed within the said enlarged bore 7 and oppositely extending reduced portions 1% and 15, the portion let projecting below the said plug and the portion 15 being of rectangular formation in cross section and passed through said reduced bore 8 into a squared passage 16 disposed in line and communicating with the bore 8. At the juncture of the upper portion 15 of the valve stem with the intermediate portion 13 thereof is a valve 17 adapted to engage the seat 9, a spring 19 encircling said intermediate portion and bearing against the underface of the valve and the flange 12 and acting to normally retain said valve 1'? closed against the seat 9. The intermediate portion of the valve stem terminates at its lower end in a shoulder 18 designed to engage the flange 12 to limit the opening movement of the valve. The turn plug 5 immediately above the valve seat 9 is provided with a port 5 adapted to establish communication between the inlet 2 and reduced bore 8 when the plug is turned on so that when the valve 17 is lowered against the action of the spring 19 to cause the said valve to lea re the seat 9, the volume of gas permitted to flow to the burner will pass through said bore 8 into the enlarged bore 7, through a port 21 in the opposite side of said plug, and then upwardly through the recess into the outlet passage and to the burner. The ring 11 has an interiorly screw threaded lower portion and threadedly secured therein is a stutling gland to pre vent leakage of the valve.
For the purpose of automatically controlling the valve l employ a cross arm 2% through which the lower end of the valve stem l-il passed and secured by means of a nut 25 threadedly secured to the lower end of the stem. The cross arm is pivoted at one end adjacent its connection with the valve to a depending arm 26 which has its upper end fastened. to said valve casing or body and its lower end provided with an eye 27 through which the pivot bolt 28 is passed.
Extending upwardly from the cross arm adjacent to the opposite end thereof is the controlling element comprising a post 29 having a screw threaded upper end upon which is adjustably secured a mushroom cap 30 which is adapted to project above the plane of the burner. By reason of this arran ement it will be manifest that when pots, pans or other articles are placed upon the burner the cap 30 will be engaged and depressed thereby, thus lowering the cross arm 2st. whose connection with the valve stem 14 causes the valve to be automatically moved to open position, the spring 19 acting to return said valve to its normal or closed position when the article is removed from the burner. It will be further obvious that by reason of the fact that the cap 30 is ad justably secured upon the controlling ele ment or post 29 that the said cap may be adjusted so as to project above the plane of the burner at different heights so as to regulate the degree of the opening of the valve and the flow of gas to the burner.
The turn plug is provided with an open ing 6 communicating with the bore 8 and adapted to register with one end of the pilot tube 31 secured to the valve casing l and communicating with the said here 8, whereby sul'licient gas is permitted to flow to the pilot tube to maintain a very small light for the purpose of igniting the larger vol ume of gas when the valve is open.
lVith a view of permitting the controlling element to drop below the plane of the burner when the flow of gas is cut oil by means of the turn plug 5, it will be noted that the upper portion of the valve stem 1a is rectangular in cross section and fitted within the squared passage 16 of the plug so that the valve stem 14: and the nut will be simultaneously rotated with the said plug. The underface of the cross arm 24:
is provided with an enlarged circular recess which surrounds the lower end of the valve stem 14, and has a cam surface cooperating with the cam surface of the nut 25 to retain the said controlling element disposed above the plane of the burner when the plug is turned on. However when the said plug is turned off the relative high portion of the cam surface of the nut leaves the similar portion of the cam surface oi the wall of the recess 32 so as to permit the cross arm to gravitate to lowered position thus causing the controlling element to assume a position below the plane of the burner. Thus the different articles may be moved about the stove without being obstructed, or without danger of breaking or deflecting the said controlling element.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be manifest that l have provided a valve of the class described which is simple in construction and one which will prevent wasting and useless burning of the gas, and while l have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that l am not to be limited to the precise construction herein shown as various changes may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
What l claim is 1. In a gas valve, a valve casing formed with an inlet and an outlet for the gas, a turn plug mounted to turn within said casing and formed with a longitudinal bore through which the gas passes, a spring seated valve controlling said longitudinal bore, a valve operating arm, and means on the stem of said valve and its operating arm the parts of which are combined in such operative relation with respect to each other that the operating arm is moved to its lowest position when the valve is turned oif.
2. In a gas valve, a valve casing formed with an inlet and an outlet for the gas, a turn plug mounted to turn within said casing and formed with a longitudinal bore through which the passes, a spring seated valve controlling said longitudinal bore, a valve operating arm, and means embodying a cam face on the stem of said valve having such relation to said operating arm that the latter is moved to its lowest position when the valve is turned 05.
8. In a gas valve, a valve casing formed with an inlet and an outlet for the gas, a turn plug mounted to turn within said casing and formed with a longitudinal bore through which the passes, a spring seated valve controlling said longitudinal bore, a valve operating arm, and means embodying co'ciperating cam faces on said arm and th stem of said valve, said cam faces having such operative relation with respect to each other that said arm is moved to its lowest position when said valve is turned off.
4:. In a gas valve, a valve casing formed with an inlet and an outlet for the gas, a turn plug mounted to turn within said casing and formed with a longitudinal bore through which the gas passes, a spring seated valve controlling said longitudinal bore and having a keyed and sliding engagement with said valve plug, a valve operating arm, and means on the stem of said valve and its operating arm the parts of which are combined in such operative relation with respect to each other that the operating arm is moved to lts lowest position when said valve is turned oil.
5. In a. gas valve, a valve casing formed with an inlet and an outlet for the gas, a turn plug mounted to turn within said casing and formed with a longitudinal bore through which the gas passes, a spring seated valve controlling said longitudinal bore, a valve operating arm, a depressible head carried by said arm and adjustable up and down in a plane perpendicular thereto, and means on the stem of said valve and its operating arm the parts Of which are combined in such operative relation with respect to each other that the operating arm is moved in its lowest position when said valve is turned off.
